As a Program Assistant at the UNC Department of Health Policy and Management, I provide comprehensive administrative support to the Program Director, contributing to the smooth operation and success of the program. My responsibilities include program operations, multimedia content creation, outreach, event planning, and logistics management. In addition to my administrative duties, I actively assist with program evaluation activities, analyzing data and identifying areas for improvement to enhance the overall experiences of stakeholders. By conducting thorough assessments and providing data-driven recommendations, I contribute to the continuous growth and development of the program. Recognizing the need for additional support and guidance for students, I took the initiative to develop and implement a student mentorship program. I conducted focus group sessions to gather insights from students, which informed my extensive research on effective mentorship strategies. Using this knowledge, I developed a comprehensive program structure rooted in evidence-based practices, ensuring that the mentorship program would provide meaningful and impactful support to students. To bring the program to life, I recruited and trained students to serve as mentors, equipping them with the skills and resources necessary to guide and support their mentees effectively.

Amman, Jordan

As an intern with the Jordan Health Aid Society International (JHASi), I assisted in planning and creating specialized first aid kits and pediatric first aid training for vulnerable women and children living in Sweileh, Southern Jordan. I observed and assessed clinical operations at Za'atari refugee camp and other community health clinics, including analyzing the efficiency of their health databases and clinic wait times. Additionally, I conducted research on topics related to health and humanitarian aid in Jordan, including the effects of climate change on health, barriers to aid in the MENA region, and the psychosocial impacts of the Syrian conflict on children. During my internship, I developed skills in healthcare service delivery for vulnerable populations and research to inform human rights and global health initiatives.

I was trained and matched with an RCP family to provide support for immediate needs such as finding employment or housing, helping families navigate health systems, acting as a cultural diplomat, and supporting families through times of crisis. Additionally, I acted as a language navigator for families who speak Arabic and ensured that RCP families receive language assistance during medical appointments, school meetings, or any other institutional activity.

The Student Equitable Medicine Initiative (SEMI) is a free, student-led program educating high school students and college freshmen across the United States about racial, ethnic, and linguistic inequities in healthcare and education. At SEMI, I work offering direct support to immigrants and people of color in the community facing linguistic barriers to education and healthcare. Additionally, I hope to utilize my position to establish a SEMI hub and network in the MENA region.

I worked with other UNC-CH students to create an innovative, multidisciplinary, and community-based solution to address the maternal mortality rate in Haiti. We used public health tools such as systems maps, logic models, and the socioecological framework to establish sustainability and effectiveness measures. We presented our solution in front of a panel of real-world public health practitioners.

Through the Critical Language Scholarship, I was able to study Arabic in Amman, Jordan. I took courses that taught aamiya (Levantine Dialect), Media, and Fusha (Formal Arabic). At the end of the program my OPI scores improved from Intermediate-High to Advanced-Mid.

As a research and program assistant at the Carolina Center for Public Service (CCPS), I played a key role in planning, organizing, and collecting data for various public service events hosted by the center. I actively promoted the SECU Public Fellows internship and public service activities to marginalized students on campus, helping to increase accessibility and inclusivity in these programs. In addition to my event-related responsibilities, I provided technical support and database updates for event websites, ensuring accurate and up-to-date information. I also assessed survey evaluations for these sites, gathering valuable feedback to improve future events and initiatives. Furthermore, I assisted in qualitative coding and data management for a community-engaged research project with the Racial Equity Institute (REI), led by a graduate assistant at CCPS. By contributing to this project, I helped evaluate REI's racial equity workshops, providing insights that could be used to enhance their effectiveness and impact.

I successfully incorporated public health education into program development by creating innovative lesson plans that integrated nutrition and mental health topics. Through conducting thorough grant research and collaborating effectively with a diverse team of professionals and local partners, I contributed insightful ideas for community improvement and helped carry out program activities. This experience allowed me to enhance my skills in curriculum development, program implementation, and community engagement while positively impacting youth well-being and violence prevention. The curriculum I developed was later used to improve future implementation, demonstrating my ability to create lasting and meaningful change in public health education programs.
