I am a passionate and motivated scientist and entrepreneur who thrives in problem-solving complex materials science, scale-up and supply problems to develop commercially driven solutions for new technology. My background is in electrochemistry and electroorganic synthesis, but more broadly I am driven by the role of materials science in green technology and I feel that I have the responsibility to ensure new technologies are not only commercially viable but also make a positive contribution to sustainability. To this end I have worked in a number of intersecting materials science fields including electrodepositon, thin film coatings, dielectrics, nanomaterials, ionic liquids and carbon capture technologies.I was a co-founder of LumiShield Technologies, a sustainable coatings technology start-up based in Pittsburgh created to solve the age-old problem of metal corrosion, while also bringing sustainability to the surface finishing industry. Through 6 years of development, I oversaw the scale-up of our first product, Lumidize, from a small lab-scale process to a 100-gallon demonstration process in collaboration with industrial partners. More recently I am the Head of Materials for ESTAT Actuation, an electroadhsive clutch based robotics start-up commercializing the mpst energy efficient and lightweight clutches in the world through the intersection of cutting edge mechanical design and high performing dielectric thin films.• Project Management for multiple projects across LumiShield and ESTAT from fundamental materials R&D to scale-up of manufacturing for new liquid, printing and assembly processes andleading teams of up to 6 direct reports.• Accomplished technical writer with multiple proposals for government contracts contributing to the award of more than $1.5 Million in non-dilutive funding for LumiShield and several NSF and DOD awards for ESTAT as a co-author.• I am a passionate communicator of science and have given numerous oral presentations regarding the implementation of sustainable materials for multiple industries including briefing DOD personnel, recuitment of students and presentation of technical results to broad audiences.I believe it is important for scientists to be able to effectively communicate ideas and vision, not just to other technical experts but also to customers and end-users. In this area, I am a keen scientific communicator with a high level of writing and presentation skills for both technical and non-technical audiences. Contact me directly at Dr.J.D.Watkins@gmail.com

Head Of MaterialsEstat Actuation Sep 2021 - Jul 2024Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United StatesAs the Head of Materials I have led teams based in materials science of up to 6 direct reports to include new materials discovery, materials validation, development of new QC processes and validation of final products.Project Management - As part of this role I developed a Project ManagementPlan for ESTAT to be adopted across the company to keep project objectives aligned with long term company goals and allow for cross-discipline work while remaining agile to developing customer needs.Supplier Development and Supply Chain Optimization - I have cultivated and developed relationships with suppliers in ink manufacture, screen priniting and flat component assembly that have led to the development of a new dielectric coating now owned by ESTAT and grown a manufacturing supply chain that allows for the printing and assembly of new products within 10 weeks and over a 50% price reduction in manufacture compared to in-house assembly.Communication and Technical Writing - To support the development of ESTAT I have co-written 6 patent applications focused on protecting novel dielectric materials and their use in electrostatic devices as well as co-authoring successful NSF and DOD SBIR Phase II applications. I have also presented ESTAT at both recuitment events and technical trade shows. -
Senior ScientistLumishield Technologies Jan 2016 - Jul 2021Greater Pittsburgh AreaAs a co-founder and current Senior Scientist for LumiShield, I am a key innovator in the development of our core coatings technology. I am responsible for proposal writing, technical presentations, and project management as well as a leader in R&D operations. • Creative problem Solver – As the leader of R&D I work quickly to solve coatings problems, adapting quickly to challenges and formulating a technical strategy to test and improve our coatings system for customers.• Entrepreneurship – As a solutions-focused scientific leader for LumiShield I focus on non-dilutive fundraising efforts through government grant writing resulting in the raising of over $1.5 Million in funding for R&D.• Communication – As the primary technical presenter and writer for LumiShield I have written 2 trade articles and give upwards of 6 technical presentations per year to diverse audiences ranging from the military to coatings experts. I was also the presentor for LumiShield when we were named an XTechSearch semi-finalist in an Army Technology search competition.• Commercial Focus – To strengthen our technology portfolio I have collaborated with our patent attorney and been the key technical writer for 3 key patent applications to safeguard LumiShield’s commercial viability.http://www.lumishieldtech.com -
Orise FellowNational Energy Technology Laboratory Jul 2013 - Dec 2015Greater Pittsburgh Area• Established a new electrochemical laboratory within the carbon capture group to analyze materials for sustainable carbon capture resulting in the development of new characterization methodologies.• Worked collaboratively with engineers, data scientists, and synthetic scientists within DOE and Carnegie Mellon University to test and analyze novel materials for carbon capture resulting in 3 peer-reviewed, published articles. -
Visiting ScholarCarnegie Mellon University Jul 2013 - Dec 2015Greater Pittsburgh AreaAs part of a joint effort with the National Energy Technology Laboratory, I worked closely with Carnegie Mellon University Engineers as a visiting scholar to develop economically viable carbon capture processes. -
Post Doctoral Research AssociatePrinceton University Feb 2012 - Jul 2013United StatesI have worked in the laboratory of Prof. Andrew Bocarsly in the field of electrochemical reduction processes of carbon dioxide to useful fuels. This new project was aimed at the design, synthesis and characterisation of room temperature ionic liquids towards the sequestration and mitigation of gaseous carbon dioxide. This project focused on potential solutions for the global energy crisis and has given me a broader appreciation for research outside of academia. It has also afforded me the opportunity to mentor early stage PhD candidates and develop further skills in synthesis and characterisation techniques with electrochemistry and NMR spectroscopy. -
Phd ResearcherUniversity Of Bath Oct 2008 - Jan 2012UkDuring my PhD (2008 – 2012) I have studied under the joint supervision of Prof. Frank Marken in physical chemistry and Dr. Steven Bull in organic chemistry at the University of Bath. My project has been mainly concerned with the electrosynthetic transformations of organic molecules at liquid | liquid | electrode triple phase boundaries. This has involved working in a cross discipline environment between electrochemistry and organic chemistry.I have worked in a collaborative environment both with other PhD students and other members of the chemistry community both in Bath and at other institutes within Europe. In 2009 I have completed a work placement working with Prof. Marcin Opallo at the Polish Institute of Physical Sciences, Warsaw.Link to my thesis is available in websites section. -
Undergraduate Lab Demonstrator And CoordinatorUniversity Of Bath Apr 2008 - Dec 2011Bath, United KingdomI have been involved in teaching undergraduate students (1st and 2nd year) physical chemistry and maths under both practical and workshop circumstances.
