I also take care of the printing and social media advertising needs of any project. My aim is to make the life of the client as easy as I possibly can during the design process.Time management and organisation are crucial. Meeting the deadlines of projects currently ongoing, managing projects which are in the pipeline, and those small urgent jobs which appear out of the blue - this is all part of the daily work process.Whether it's making sure all the numbers add up in the accounts, to mixing with clients and planning the creative design projects that come through the door... it's all good stuff. I'm sure there's time in there somewhere to make a cuppa, too! Show less

Unknown to me, my original application for the Junior Designer position had been rejected, but as I hadn't heard from the company for a couple of weeks, I gave them a call. They invited me over for an interview, liked what they saw and gave me the job.Life as a junior designer was a world away from what I learnt at University. No more spending a couple of weeks on a single brief, it was fast and furious. Because a massive part of our work base at the time was press advertising, I was also sent off to night classes for typing lessons.I began by shadowing the senior designer, producing sections for projects and learning the importance of brand management and brand consistency. It soon became clear I had a good eye for detail, so I took care of image selections for many of the brochure design jobs during the design process. I then moved on to larger projects such as vehicle liveries, this also meant I would begin dealing with clients outside the comfy world of the design studio. My learning curve as a junior design was well calculated, and sometimes I would be pushed above my abilities at the time. Working as part of a tight-knit studio team, those early years also helped shape me in my personal life, as well as my work life. Show less

After completing a number of exams over a period of a couple of months, i was fortunate to get a final interview for the apprenticeship. Sat among other possible recruits with their fine looking folders full of engineering certificates, all i had to show was my trusty art college portfolio, full of product and graphic design projects. This seemed to go down well with the examiners, all peering over each others shoulders to gain a glimpse of the illustrations on show. I got the idea it was a breath of fresh air after looking at folder after folder of certificates. The apprenticeship was a 3 year programme. The first year was spent in the 'apprentice shed', learning the skills we would need to succeed - milling machines, lathes, CNC machines, pillar drills, electronics, fitting and welding.Years 2 and 3 were spent learning your chosen profession, i chose graphic design and technical illustration. For me this meant 2 years at Doncaster College and time in the technical illustration department at BAe, Brough. From machine coolant to sharpened pencil - it was a superb experience. Show less
