Experienced electrical engineer with a strong embedded firmware background. I am good at solving complex problems at the component and system level, and do not give up when the problem is tough. In each position I have had the opportunity to contribute to the success of the product and the organization through improving the design, identifying ways to streamline processes, and working with others.

Lead Electrical EngineerHyliion Nov 2017 - May 2020Cedar Park, Texas, UsLead team of junior electrical engineers and a design engineer that also included a test engineerWorked with remote teams in TX, OH, PA and CA to coordinate tasks/resolve technical issuesDesigned an ARM based device using the Octavo OSD355x that included 4 CAN ports, GigE, 2 UARTs, 8 Lo-side drive, 12 Analog inputs, LIN, wrote HW test plan, assisted in SW bring up and planned system integrationDevelop specification for system components (1.5kW bi-directional DC/DC, and 6.6kWhr, LTO, 144s1p Battery system). Worked with vendors to answer technical questions.Used the 8D process to help identify root cause for on-going problems with the Hyliion systemProvided technical leadership regarding electrical engineering, and electrical concepts to the mechanical engineering team and upper management -
Sr. Electrical EngineerFallbrook Technologies Oct 2012 - Nov 20172016 - present: work on new products for custom applications by writing embedded firmware and custom command line tools for communication via CAN. Also wrote embedded firmware to interface an Infineon TC1782 to a pedal speed / torque sensor (from NCTE). The firmware reports pedal speed and torque over the CAN bus2013 - 2016: maintain existing Harmony and H|Sync products. This included fixing firmware bugs and add features as needed. Provided technical support to the Sales and Service teams and provided system level support when there were issues that arose "outside" our product. Helped address mechanical deficiencies by providing firmware updates to work around, and avoid, then problem. Supported two flavors of the device: one on a Freescale MC9S08JM32 and a newer generation using the STM32H072 (ARM M0 core)2012 - 2013: Locate and resolve problems in Dynasys APU ECU and User interface. Made some fundamental simplifications and design changes to make the product easier to use and understand. Fix long-standing communication problems that would cause unsaved data, and some erratic behavior. Embedded firmware program debugging using the Microchip dsPIC32. Also helped resolve manufacturing problems and other design and unit assembly issues.

Sr Electrical EngineerAscendant Engineering Solutions Dec 2006 - Oct 2012Austin, Tx, UsContract engineering company that provided the opportunity to do a large variety of work for a variety of customers which included:- Hardware design for a 3D hologram machine. The hardware design included Altera FPGAs connected to two banks of DDR2 memory, PCIe, analog circuits for creating the common signal for a 1080p LCD display including layout directives, signal integrity using Hyperlynx simulation - Designed a PCB intended to be implanted in a human for use as a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) using a high-performance, low power Atmel SAM microcontroller. The design included a battery gas gauge IC from TI, a battery charge IC from TI, and Brushless, Sensorless, 3-phase DC motor driver and wireless MICs communication- reviewed existing designs the had memory problems for a client. identified the design flaws and recommended changes (after simulation using Hyperlynx), implemented schematic and layout changes and confirmed proper operation. Design included, DDR2 memory, NAND flash, SRAMs and FIFO memories on the same bus.- helped with project scoping and writing proposals for new work and managed small projects and provided weekly status reports- Used OrCAD, and OrCAD CIS (for some customers) -
Firmware DesignerTexas Instruments Sep 1999 - Dec 2006Dallas, Tx, UsWrote embedded firmware for a custom microcontroller for use in Battery Gas Gauging applications (bq2016, bq20885, bq20z70, and others) designed a USB peripheral (EV2300) for use in interfacing to the gas gauge IC over SMBus (similar to I2C). And helped write the Windows drive for the USB peripheral.Designed development boards for new IC platforms and assisted customers in technical design issues (firmware and circuit design, and layout)Used PCAD for schematic capture -
Hardware DesignerE-Net (Out Of Business) Aug 1998 - Aug 1999Hardware design for voice over IP (VoIP) which included TI DSPs, Xilinx FPGA, Subscriber Line Analog Circuits (SLIC) and Subscriber Line Analog Circuits (SLAC). Wrote some embedded firmware for the DSP to interact with the FPGA and handle managing the PCI interface to a host computerUsed OrCAD for schematic capture

Research Engineer Associate IiApplied Research Laboratories, The University Of Texas At Austin Aug 1993 - Aug 1998Austin, Texas, UsDesigned analog and digital circuit for use in SONAR installed submarines (US Navy). Held security clearance (level omitted). Circuit design included:- AC power filtering- DC / DC design- FPGA and micro controller hardware design- Stearable Analog Beamformer using analog circuitry (preceded ability to digitize and perform the beam forming in the digital realm)- Analog signal conditioning- System characterization of the vertical beams in water- wire lists for interconnecting processing units- Interfaced with PCB layout designers, electrical technicians, and assemblers and test facilities- spent time on a submarine to test and record SONAR data
