Nearly 350,000 Americans will be sleeping in a shelter or other temporary facility. Tens of thousands more will be sleeping outside rough facing the health risks of physical crimes in addition to the mental illness, healthcare disparities and substance use disorders. Sadly, there are thousands upon thousands of United States Veterans, juveniles, single women with children, couples with kids and minorities sheltered and unsheltered who deserve a simple thing called: a home of their own. Homelessness is an American crisis and will take a national team of experienced, dedicated and passionate people for the work that needs to be done in order to manage and eradicate this crisis. I worked 20 years in the surgical field a first assistant and technologist including a major pediatric hospital in Buffalo, N.Y. and a large hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina. In need of a change another road less traveled came my way and I took a deep breath and turned down it. So, I completed my bachelor's degree in health care studies following up with 12 graduate credits in Health Care Administration and 22 credit hours in Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management at Arkansas State University. I have a 4.0 GPA in the former graduate program and a 3.2 GPA in the DPEM program. In addition, I have numerous certifications in emergency management through FEMA training and also through North Carolina TERMS training, exercise and response management system. I am a certified American Heart Association Basic Life Support instructor and have my CERT instructor certification. Formerly, I was a board member of a non-profit that is on the front line of homelessness and also was the director of their emergency shelter. Impacting and changing lives I utilized HMIS case management solution with an overall client base of over 100 and 40 clients and any given time. With a team of other from various agencies providing resources for housing first strategies, substance use disorder care and mental health care solutions I found out that lives can be and are changed. The one decision I am most proud of is becoming a part of a Street Medicine Team in 2018 called H3. H3 stands for Health, Healing, Hope. Along with the founders--a retired physician and his wife--as well as other health care professionals, we meet those in need where they are providing free healthcare. I am in the trenches with dedicate people and the battle against homelessness will take down the crisis in America.
