This complex needs supported living project of 10 self contained flats, aims to provide a transitional home for clients for approx. 12 to 36 months, leading to independent living. My role is to support clients to lead independent and inclusive lives. This includes recovery planning, risk assessments, and providing person-centred care inline with the Mental Health Recovery Model. Initially employed on the bank register, I moved over to p/t and then f/t contracted hours, as this shift-based role provided greater flexibility to fit around my university studies.

Working with an incredible team in the Foundation Prospects department, this role involved working with students with a recognised learning need, engaging them in an Employability qualification to aid progression towards employment and/or continued education. Essentially, I acted as a team leader for LD&D students supervising group work-experience activities. I also oversaw Supported Internship students on individual work placements. Additionally, I worked with NEET students delivering modules of Health and Social Care qualifications. I achieved an overall Grade 1 Outstanding rating for my core observations. I was sad to leave this highly rewarding role which I had taken on to fit around my studies, but my role at CareTech provided greater flexibility for my University and placement commitments.

Working for the Portsmouth Recovery Hub, I managed a caseload of IOM (Integrated Offender Management) clients, providing structured psychosocial interventions. I facilitated groups, maintained close contact with the new providers of the IOM prison/community based worked that I had started in my previous role, liaised with Police and Probation, local providers of wrap-around services including housing, AMH, debt advice, residential rehabilitation and detoxification treatment providers, social care etc. I took a lead role in the training and facilitation of Reflective Practice and the delivery/promotion of Motivational Interviewing. In addition to this, I was also as an NVQ Tutor and Assessor for a "Working Therapeutically with Addictions and Recovery Diploma". This was actually an aspect of all of my roles with Portsmouth City Council over a six year period. As a tutor, I oversaw a group of students in addition to teaching the Practical Skills module of the course, which included units on: Motivational Interviewing, Group and Interpersonal Dynamics and Presentation Skills. Moreover, I facilitated Reflecting Practice and Personal Development groups. This was, and is, a very successful course that seeks to up-skill volunteers with a lived experience of addiction and recovery that are beyond their own treatment needs. It has a proven track record of students progressing into further/higher education &/or employment in the treatment arena and associated professions.

Integrated Commissioning Unit

Another pilot project, this role was built on the success of the previous Development Worker position. Using the same premise, I took a recovery focused model into HMP Winchester to work directly with Portsmouth IOM clients, who were not engaging well with the IOM scheme or treatment services. This was a hugely challenging, yet rewarding role. I set up and ran three successful SMART Recovery groups, 2 in HMP Winchester and 1 in HMP Westhill. Needing to liaise with Governors, Prison Officers, in-house Probation and the guys who attended the groups, the role required excellent communication and relationship building skills. Outside the prison, I liaised with IOM, the Police and Probation, the local service user group and treatment services. The role required further support, and a p/t worker was employed to support the project as it grew.Having established this project successfully, it was then commissioned to a provider, The Society of St. James, who continue this work to this date.

Integrated Commissioning Unit

This role was a pilot project borne out of the idea that, maybe clients are not "hard to reach" or "difficult to engage", but rather that they were disillusioned with the current system. Clients were trapped in a cycle of prison, hostels and homelessness. So, we took the work to them.Using SMART Recovery, we took the recovery conversation into the local hostels and worked with clients that were not engaging. We incentivised group attendance inline with NICE guidelines on Contingency Management. The role consisted of liaising with SMART Recovery UK to develop a SMART Partnership programme with local service providers. As such, I became the Commissioning-level SMART Champion for the city. Groups were started in three different hostels whilst interest in the model was further developed in the community. So called " difficult to engage" clients did engage and we achieved many successful outcomes, with clients re-engaging with treatment services and moving on into more suitable accommodation. This also resulted in lower rates of criminality. This success paved the way for an expansion of role, taking the same model into the local allocations prison. Volunteering for the service user group Pushing Change, I undertook work as an advocate for people experiencing difficulties with their treatment providers. I also facilitated group supervision for advocates. In addition to this, in my role as chair person, I chaired the weekly service user forum, delegated tasks to service user representatives, delivered workshops on Overdose Prevention, Harm Reduction, BBVs and other topics.

The role included multi-agency partnership working, consultation, service development, volunteer recruitment, training and coordination.Based on the OUT (Oxfordshire User Team) model, I implemented an independent advocacy service and a peer mentoring service. Managing a team of volunteers, we provided meaningful involvement at all levels of service design, provision and evaluation.
