WriterIndependent Authors Jan 2016 - PresentCuenca, EcuadorMy latest adventure is writing science fiction, beginning with the "Deplosion" series. Book one should be available in Dec 2016, with two and three shortly thereafter. As a scientist, my intention is to write books that educate and speculate as much as they entertain. I take my inspiration from writers like David Brin, Greg Bear, John C. Wright, Peter F. Hamiltion, and Robert Heinlein.I write under the pen name, Paul Anlee. Check my author page and blog for more info: www.paulanlee.com. -
CtoCarbonitum Energy Corporation Sep 2009 - Dec 2015Carbonitum Energy Corporation is a Canadian company I co-founded to develop the photobiological conversion of flue gas carbon dioxide from large industrial emitters into methane, for recycling back to the emitter or for storage. Carbonitum is in the process of raising private equity funding to leverage available government funding for a three year program to: 1) demonstrate bench-scale proof of concept, 2) optimize the microbiology and process, and 3) construct a pilot plant with 1 tonne CO2 /day processing capability for integration testing. We anticipate completion of our first round of financing ) later this year and intend to leverage this with applications to government sponsored research programs, including IRAP, Climate Change Emissions Management Corporation (CCEMC),Carbon Management Canada and nanoWorks.

Assistant Research OfficerNational Institute For Nanotechnology Oct 2004 - Aug 2009Programmable, Functional Bacteria ProjectThe goal of this project is to investigate the capability for programming novel behavior and capabilities into E. coli bacteria through genetic engineering and protein design. I initiated this project in collaboration with David Wishart and assumed responsibility for the research within the Project under his general direction. I have had the primary responsibility for setting up a functional research group, including training new personnel and supervising their research activities, establishing laboratory protocols and writing funding applications. My work at NINT involved designing and genetically engineering proteins to have novel functions in both the test tube and in vivo in bacterial cells. These engineered proteins enable the programming of potentially useful new functions and behaviors directly into a living organism. We investigated engineering robust in vivo binding in E. coli through adhesin or outer membrane surface molecules with engineered binding motifs. As well, we designed and tested a method for sequential integration of multiple transgenes into the E. coli chromosome without accompanying plasmid selection markers. Policy planning and workshopsI actively participated in two national policy, planning and foresight workshops in 2007-2008, resulting in major policy documents and recommendations. The PACT-NBIS (Prospective Applications for Converging Technologies in Nano-Bio-Info Systems) Foresight Workshop was held March 2007 and was co-sponsored by THECIS (The Centre for Innovation Studies) and the Office of the National Science Advisor. The Canadian Workshop on Multidisciplinary Research in Nanotechnology: Gaps, Opportunities and Priorities was held in January 2008 and was sponsored by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, Environment Canada, Health Canada and Industry Canada.
