Wayne McClain is Associate General Counsel, Managing Director and Head of Pension Law for TIAA Financial Services focusing his practice on retirement benefit plans and ERISA compliance. He manages a crack team of attorneys originally formed to resolve tax and ERISA issues. The team promptly expanded their duties to become integral legal and business partners to the organization. If you have a question, if no one else can help, and if you can find time on their calendar, maybe you can engage the ERISA-Team.He has a 26 year background in tax, ERISA and securities law compliance for qualified and non-qualified retirement plans with special emphasis on governmental and not-for-profit entity plans.Prior to joining TIAA, Wayne most recently served as Senior ERISA Counsel, Assistant Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer for Lincoln Financial Group’s Retirement Plan Services division and the Lincoln Financial Group Trust Company.Wayne has extensive experience in both the national law firm and national insurance company settings, including as Senior Counsel for several American International Group (AIG) companies, including The Variable Annuity Life Insurance Company (VALIC) and SunAmerica. In addition to his experience as a senior ERISA attorney, Mr. McClain has significant experience managing the administration and compliance of multi-billion dollar benefit plans in higher education. Mr. McClain was the Director of Benefits Plan Administration and Compliance for the University of Illinois and the University Director of Retirement Program Services for Indiana University. His experience in managing benefit plans for major state universities has given him a unique insight into the distinct needs of and challenges faced by tax-exempt and governmental plan sponsors in benefit plan administration and compliance.Mr. McClain is a graduate of Indiana University (BA), The Philadelphia Institute, the Indiana University - Robert H. McKinney School of Law (JD) and the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Law (formerly The John Marshall Law School) (LLM in employee benefits).
