Several projects were completed with the initial equipment leading to the introduction of the industry's first DALI networked controller in 2002, That controller signaled a turning point in the industry and received the industry's highest award, the Judge's Citation Award, as well as best new product and best in category awards that same year. Since then, we have completed multiple commercial and institutional projects around the country including a few shown below.Several other equipment and software items followed which were first fully employed at the Kansas City Convention Center. Many more projects followed along with the development of the industry's first line of object oriented controls which are the subject of the two pending patents described below.

Power distribution, Lighting, Project Planning, Specification Development, Building Commissioning.Shortly after being hired by UCAR, the parent organization of NCAR, we purchased a campus of buildings to be gutted and remodeled. Our group worked with the organization divisions to produce a requirements statement and RFP for the project and then supervised the design, building, and commissioning of the project. Governing the design of the building, was a mandate from the UCAR BoD to make the building energy efficient and user friendly. Each office had individual temperature control, dimmable fluorescent lighting, occupancy control for lighting and HVAC, daylighting, and the first know application of vacancy control. All of this was quite new at the time but the most unique element was connecting the lighting system to the networked HVAC system so it could be remotely configured, controlled, and monitored, This capacity lead to the building becoming a test site for a comprehensive field study by the Lighting Research Center to evaluate the effectiveness of these type of energy measures many of which have now become standard practice.

Product development, manufacturing, technical writing, engineering management, financial planning.Catalina introduced the first digital spa controls in 1981 after working with UL for over a year to revise three temperature control standards to allow functionally based controls in lieu of the previously required component based controls. That controller also introduced the first membrane switch control panel that could operate in the hot, humid environment found under sap covers and was the first commercial application of high amperage, circuit board mounted relays that are now commonly used in lighting control. The company was sold in 1985 to Carlo Gavazzi, a Swiss Conglomerate and later to Brett Aqualine which continued to manufacturer the controller for almost 20 years.

Worked for Mel Vinson who was a great mentor and seemed to think I could do just about anything. Started with form design for the 120 foot high post-stressed concrete reactor vessel and then progressed to process pipe spooling, large equipment move-in studies, an isometric scale model of the HVAC system, and finally studies and installation of the plant control systems. Oh, but the most important was my epic victory in the Engineering vs. Pipe Fitters Jalapeno eating contest...och...but worth it? (I was young)
