Supply And Cover Teacher

Current

Institutions and roles: cover/supply teacher and TA work at Priestnell High School (five days over March and April); Parrswood High School, East Didsbury (English cover work from late March till the end of second term, May 2024); St James' Catholic School (five days of English cover and two days of supply teaching, May and June); William Hulme Grammar School, Whalley Range (three weeks English cover and two weeks TA work with Year 8 and 9 SEND groups, and general supply work, March and July 2024.While visiting family and friends in New Zealand from July 21 to September 1, 2024, and during the UK summer school holidays when supply and cover teaching work was unavailable to me there, I worked as an English teacher at a Rudolf Steiner School, Michael Park School, on long-term (one-month) relief. See below. I state this here because, for some reason, I could not add this month of work in the employment section.OasisEducation, Auckland, New ZealandAuckland, New ZealandI was tasked with relieving a permanent staff member on sick leave. The position required teaching Year 11 and Year 12 classes and the NZCA English Literature curriculum, WWI Poetry, and Unfamiliar Text Analysis, respectively. Furthermore, I taught the Year 12 group an additional twenty periods of Steiner Main Lesson English lessons focused on Beat Poetry from the 1950s and 1960s through Eminem and New Zealand Spoken Poetry. In addition, I oversaw the relief of Year 12 and 13 Media Studies classes engaged in film studies. I took registration but acted as a springboard for discussion and a support person for significant essay and production assignments students in both classes were engaged in.Lastly, I completed day-to-day relief (UK-speak: supply teaching) assignments at Michael Park School during non-contact periods. On two consecutive Fridays, I worked full days on a supply basis at two schools in South Auckland, Mangere College and Southern Cross Primary 5&6 Hub.

Unemployed And Updating Qualifications

At Home

Kuala Belait, Belait District, Brunei

My wife and I migrated to Manchester, the United Kingdom, on 23 December 2023 on a UK ancestry visa to be with our three children for a few years. I also wanted to work again, which, on an extended social visit pass in Brunei Darussalam courtesy of my marriage to my wife, a Brunei citizen, I was not able to do either in paid professional or unpaid voluntary capacities from 30 June 2021 to December 2023. I was also 65 and prohibited by Brunei's relatively strict enforced retirement age policy, which stipulates compulsory retirement at age 60.

Jul 2021 - Dec 2023

Project Assistant Coordinator / Tefl Instructor

International School Brunei (Isb) English Language Centre (Elc)

Muara, Brunei Darussalam

In this role, I supported the development of the ISB ELC project providing on-site English language teaching for Hengyi Industries Ltd. I utilised my vast experience in education and course development to collaborate on the creation of the course curriculum, lesson plans, and learning materials to teach English to students ranging between beginner and pre-intermediate levels.*NB The ISB ELC contract with Hengyi Industries to deliver TEFL/ESL services was terminated by the client company as at 30 June and ISB terminated my contract early as at the same date. I can provide an ISB letter of termination evidencing these facts. Unfortunately, I cannot provide a reference or an up to date statement of service because ISB policy is to provide these directly to an ex-ISB employee’s prospective future employers upon request. This practice is apparently now the norm but I find the circumventing, leaving of employees concerned out of the loop, of great concern. It is a denial of what I believe to be a fundamental right with regard to work and finding it.That said, some key achievements from this role include:• Held joint responsibility for online training of postgraduate TEFL instructors during COVID-19 pandemic lockdown periods in 2019.• Led design and implementation of TEFL courses to support student-workers in achieving IELTS qualifications.• Co-planned and designed TEFL course training and reporting formats.• Held Principal Liaison role to lead communications with client company's HR and Health Safety & Environment personnel regarding ISB ELC onsite delivery of English Language.• Taught 90 adult student-workers over six 12-week cycles, achieving average score of 75.5% in collated progress tests for each cycle throughout the two-year period.• April through May 2021 took over the teaching of Pre-Intermediate Business English course for a colleague on medical leave
