This came about because I identified the strategic capability gap in the wake of the withdrawal of digital forensic services to Immigration Investigations by an external agency. My business case resulted in Immigration establishing its own in-house capability through my existing team. This included a risk management plan as the project had a number of major risks inherent in its deliverables. They related to highly specialist equipment, establishing a digital forensics laboratory and complex technical training. I built strong governance and audit structures into the policies and procedures to provide guidance to staff. This included ensuring the project's deliverables, such as the equipment, laboratory and training met Australian and international standards (National Association of Testing Authorities - NATA – and the international ISO17025:2005 standard) and best practice. The project is on time, on budget and no major risks have been realised. The Digital Forensics Team and Laboratory are now fully operational with fully equipped field laboratories providing capabilities to triage evidence, acquire and image data from a range of digital devices including mobile phones. The team’s laboratory in Canberra is fully equipped with a range of advanced analytical tools. The laboratory is also compliant with NATA standards. Show less
