I have been fortunate in my life and military career to have been surrounded by exceptional people, who I am proud to call my friends. I feel I have been able to capture many of the experiences (good and bad) in my life situations and link this with academic learning to produce outstanding results in the field of training and coaching of individuals and teams. These endeavours were supported by some amazing colleagues, that were up front and honest with me when some of my proposals were way off the mark. With their friendship, honesty and guidance we were able to completely re-shape the way Army conducts its combat shooting continuum. Not necessarily through shooting techniques although this was definitely a part of it but the magic was developing excellent instructors. To develop these instructors, we need to start with an honest self assessment using recognised diagnostic tools. From there, have them understand human behaviour and how to link this to structured and formal lessons. Then comes the introduction to coaching techniques, which is a life long lesson but the basic concepts go a long way. Providing the correct skill, knowledge and attitude is crucial and finally being able to conduct an effective and pro-active debrief is pivotal. During the transformation of the Army shooting continuum, I was approached by a number of state police agencies and again was fortunate to be able to create modified and tailored training packages for every state and territories Police Tactical Group. Much like Army there are many dedicated, professional and skilled instructors, who I still speak to regularly about progressing and enhancing training.I hope to be able to bring these training qualities, methods and inspiration to my new role in ERS as well as understand, internalise and adapt this knowledge to my new life and job within ERS.I look forward to being able to share different experiences through this medium and hopefully receive input, ideas and feedback from others more experience than I.
