The story is told by Wayne Cordeiro from Hawaii when he was 9 years old and his father was stationed in Japan. One Saturday they went to a local market high on a hillside above the city. A young lady was selling flowers, and an old man was calling out in Japanese, "Welcome, welcome!" The old man was sitting with a box, & on top was a little bamboo cage. Wayne ran over to the old man, looked at the bamboo cages and asked, "What are you doing?" The old man replied, "Grasshopper, I am selling these rice birds (finches)." "How much are they? Wayne asked. "100 yen, grasshopper." the old man replied. "I'll take one." said Wayne. He gave the old man 100 yen, which was about 36 cents at the time, and he took the little bird & cage and turned to walk back to his father. "Wait, grasshopper!" the old man cried. "Bring the cage back when you are done!" Wayne was caught off guard. "I aIn't gonna eat it!" he exclaimed; I'm going to take it home for a pet." "That's not why you bought it." "So why did I buy it?" "Ah, grasshopper, you bought it so you could take it to the edge & set it free!" Confused, but after deliberating, and wondering if the old man had any Ninja stars in his kimono, he decided to set the rice bird free. So Wayne took the bird to the edge, opened the door, and after a few taps, the little bird moved to the open door, chirped and tweeted, and soared off to freedom, flying away in a huge boomerang circle. The bird came flying back over Wayne as if to say, "Thank you very much!" and then flew off until it was out of sight. To this day, the exhilaration of setting the bird free still dances in Wayne's heart. Like Wayne, we are called to tap on the cages of people whose dreams are captive, and release them to embrace their destiny. Thus our name: DREAM RELEASERS.
