I have been an announcer in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association for the past 27 years. I've announced rodeos and special events all over the United States, including 4 times at the Mountain States Prorodeo Circuit Finals, 3 times at the First Frontier Prorodeo Circuit Finals, and 1 time at the Wilderness Prorodeo Circuit Finals. In addition, I have also been selected to announce the American Quarter Horse Association World Show 4 times, and the National Reining Horse Association Futurity 3 times. In 2013 I was selected to emcee the Prorodeo Hall of Fame induction ceremonies as well. Aside from my announcing career, I have also started a very successful custom leather business called Double U Leather. As a professional PA announcer, my duties are wide ranging. I'm required to be part educator, part entertainer, and part choreographer. It's almost like being a conductor in an orchestra. Each instrument is a vital part of the entire piece, and it's up to me to make all of the pieces fit together. Everything from working with specialty acts to taking care of the sponsors to calling the live action all fall into what I do. And, most importantly, I need to do all of that in a manner that entertains the people who have paid hard earned money to experience a performance of professional rodeo.
My job as a professional rodeo announcer is two-fold. First and foremost, it's my job to be an entertainer to the audience. By that I mean I need to create an atmosphere of energy and excitement to the event. I want to draw the audience into the performance so that they feel they are a part of the game. Whether it be seasoned rodeo fans or first timers, I want them all to feel as if they are involved. The second part of my job is that of an educator. It's important that audience members, especially those who aren't overly familiar with the sport of rodeo, understand all of the nuances of our game. From rules to scoring to the minor details that separate winning runs, it's my job to make sure the audience understands. Other parts of my job include sponsor recognition, background information on livestock and contestants, as well as the flexibility to handle unexpected situations. There is no script in professional rodeo, therefore as an announcer I must be able to think quickly on my feet as the action unfolds. Perhaps the easiest way to describe my job is that of an orchestra conductor. Although by no means I am the star of the rodeo, I'm the one directs each piece of the puzzle to fit together into a 2 1/2 hour package that leaves the audience feeling like they were glad they were there and enjoyed themselves during the event. Ultimately, professional rodeo is entertainment. Fans have many choices where to spend their entertainment dollar, and it's my duty to ensure they are entertained at our game.
