We meet at Ronald Reagan High School, an MPS school on the south side of Milwaukee and St. Anthony's a choice school also on the south side. We have lunch, a short talk/speaker, and then meet with students one on one to help them with life issues, college selection/criteria, jobs, and anything else the students want to talk about. I joined Russ Darrow as CFO, with responsibility for all accounting, tax and finance duties for the dealership group’s seven dealerships and holding company. Five years later, I hired my successor and became Executive Vice-President. At that point the dealership group had grown to 14 dealerships plus a buy-here-pay-here organization that included five locations and a finance company. During this rapid growth phase I was responsible for working directly with legal counsel on all negotiations and documentation for the acquisitions. I had direct responsibility for all factory applications and documentation as well as integration of the new employees into our existing corporate structure. As Executive Vice-President, my duties included:• Initiating, organizing, and leading a peer group training and educational program for the parts, service, and body shop employees in the organization. This included a comparative financial analysis and quarterly full-day meetings to share best practices, take part in accountability groups, and work toward improved financial performance. Most of our dealerships were highly ranked in the manufacturers’ comparative groups.• Responsibility for the entire buy-here-pay-here organization. This organization had 75 employees, five locations, and a separate finance company.• Oversight of two new-car dealerships. The general managers reported to me, and I reported to the owner regarding profitability and operation of these locations.

When I joined Heiser, I was the controller for one of the group’s three dealerships. Within one year, I became the controller of the entire organization. I subsequently became Vice-President of not only the operating dealerships but also the holding company and several related entities. My responsibilities and duties during my 11-year tenure included the following:• Oversight of financial, accounting and tax functions• Acquisition of two additional dealerships, including negotiation, legal documentation, and factory approval, as well as integration and coordination of new employees.• Negotiating and executing shareholder buy-sell agreements for several minority shareholders• Acquiring financing for building expansion projects• Setting up a separate finance and insurance company, real estate company, and management holding company• Setting up an offshore company to maximize tax benefits for the finance and insurance companies• Developing a peer group style meeting format for quarterly meetings of parts, service, and body shop managers for all dealerships. Meetings included a full financial analysis. We improved all departments to best practice status as a result of ongoing monitoring and training.
