Superconductors conduct electricity with nearly no resistance that can make strong magnetic fields. But widespread use is mainly limited to Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRIs). That is because conventional superconductors must be cooled to extremely low temperatures similar to outer space. On earth, cooling uses liquid helium which is expensive and difficult.Three Innovations with Superconductors and Magnetism:1) Reinforced High Temperature Superconductors (HTS). HTS use cheap liquid nitrogen for cooling promising cheap superconductivity. But after 35 years and > 200,000 research papers, HTS are still not widely used because they are brittle and break easily. I was at Cambridge University as a ¨mature¨ (i.e. old fart) Visiting Researcher in one of my personal interests: African Village Electrification. At a lecture on solar panels, Dr. Mark Ainslie told me about Cambridge's Bulk Superconductivity Group. I had an idea, the Group's Head, Prof. David Cardwell (now a University Pro Vice Chancellor - not surprising given his leadership skills) said ¨let's try it out¨ . . . it worked! The breakthrough (https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1361-6668/ab7ec4/pdf) should lead to practical superconductor use beyond MRIs. LAU Superconductors was formed to further R&D at a laboratory offered to us by University of Wisconsin (Eau Claire). 2) Innovation ¨lightening¨ struck again a few years later with Superconductors in Space. Though space is cold enough (4°K) for superconductivity. But Superconductors in Space @ Ambient Temperature has never been tried. The superconductors needed in space for instrumentation and infrared telescopes are cooled with mechanical coolers. We innovated a new magnetic coilgun which allows objects to be launched in space without rocket fuel using solar power and superconductors. Superconductor magnetism can also stop moving objects in space. Together these allow the ¨Holy Grail¨ of missile defense called Boost-Phase Missile Interception. Game Theory suggests this should lead to the obsolescence of strategic nuclear missiles. This innovation has been endorsed by the U.S. Missile Defense Agency. An awareness Media Strategy (part of the Game Theory) will be launched when grants have been officially awarded. We are forming another laboratory in Huntsville, AL.3) Recent innovation: China has a undetectable Hypersonic Glide Vehicle (HGV) which traveled 10,000km. It can sink aircraft carriers and deliver nuclear warheads. We have innovated an enhancement for Hypersonic Flight at our Huntsville lab which should help us build one.
