I launched, led, and grew several unicorn+ (>$B ARR) businesses serving millions of customers globally. Founded, and for 11+ years led, the AWS Boston regional development center, scaling it from 1 to >4000 Amazonians, while also building teams in New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Austin, Atlanta, Arlington, and Vancouver CA. Responsibilities included product, development, operations, P&L, and GTM results.End-to-end, owned AWS Storage, Edge, and Data services businesses, used by customers to store, protect, secure, and process exabyte-scale data for application, analytics, and AI/ML needs, wherever there was customer need - in the cloud, on premise, and at the extreme-edge. AWS services / businesses (13 total) led, launched, operated, and scaled included: Amazon Elastic File System (EFS), Amazon FSx, AWS Backup, AWS S3 Edge, AWS Snow, AWS Storage Gateway, AWS DataSync, AWS Transfer, and AWS B2B Data Interchange.

Conceived, built, led, and scaled Amazon Elastic File System, the world's first cloud-native fully elastic exabyte-scale file storage, assumed leadership of and re-launched AWS Storage Gateway, establishing AWS in the hybrid-cloud storage market, and started the AWS Boston regional development center. In 2018, started and launched three additional data and storage services, Amazon FSx, a fully managed service for 3rd party and OSS file systems, and AWS Transfer and AWS DataSync, services for building and operating exabyte-scale unstructured data pipelines. Ownership included engineering development and operations, product management and roadmaps, and P&L results, with shared responsibility for business development, marketing, and sales (GTM) results.

Responsible for defining mid-range enterprise storage product-line strategy, its execution and implementation, targeting 2X ARR growth from 2011 to 2012 - for a-then $3B ARR business.

Founded group responsible for building EMC’s first software-defined (VMware and Hyper-V) virtual storage array. Developed product-market strategy, technical architecture, and execution roadmap, recruited a scrappy-team of engineers and product managers, and led its successful development and launch.

Head of Product responsible for defining product-line strategy and driving its delivery. Transformed product strategy from niche IP-storage product to a multi-protocol / data type unified product family, resulting in accelerated customer and field adoption. Transformed organization culture from crank-turning to innovators, achieving a CAGR of 29% (2007-2010) during what was a significant decline in global economic conditions.

Responsible for channel and partner business development initiatives for EMC IP-storage products, targeting Commercial, SMB and global emerging market segments. Grew international partner revenue at 67% CAGR (2005-2007). Grew domestic partner revenue 170% Y/Y (2007). Channel revenue growth contributed to an overall business revenue increase of 29% CAGR, to $1B (U.S.) ARR.

Head of Quality Engineering responsible for bar-raising business-wide quality and rapidly improving CSAT for EMC’s flagship Storage Management offering. Achieved in-field quality improvements within 6 months, reducing escaped defects by 50% and increasing customer upgrade adoption by >60%. Improvements resulted in 400% decrease in escaped defects from development with >100% decrease in release cycle times, resulting in productivity gain returns of >$10M. This led to CSAT of ~90% and org transformation from “throw-over-the-wall development” to “all-for-one” DevOps ownership.

Head of Engineering responsible for defining and building EMC’s first off-array continuous data protection (CDP) appliance. Built and led a scrappy crew, delivering a highly-available Linux blade cluster tailored for hosting storage replication and disaster recovery services.

Co-founder of EMC’s Media Solutions business unit and head of its Engineering organization. Responsible for all aspects of product development, delivery and engineering support. This business unit delivered broadcast and internet media streaming products to a then-emerging Over-the-top (OTT) broadcast market. Built and led >100 developers across four U.S. and one European location. Resulting products and solutions generated $200M ARR.

Founding engineer (#3) for EMC’s Network Attached Storage (NAS) Group. Owned protocol and operating system development (design/code/test/ops) for EMC’s File and Media Server product lines. Also relished being the volunteer designer / builder / owner / evangelist for the organization's CI/CD tooling factory (think Pre-SaaS and OSS 🙂), supporting two product-lines, dozens of concurrent releases, reams of branches, and many-hundreds of builders.
