At 13, my parents bought me a Sears and Roebuck darkroom kit that I setup in our basement fruit cellar. (Complete with dirt floor and no running water!) I then took a course at the New York Institute of Photography (which I graduated from in 1960). At 15 years old I photographed my first wedding from which I processed and printed 12 black and white images and delivered them in an 8x10 white “leatherette” album!While attending seminary to study theology, I worked as a photographer and custom printer at the Bendix Corporation, where I learned the technical side of photography and enlarger printing from a tough taskmaster. The skills and work ethic instilled here proved to be invaluable when in the late 60’s, my older bother Ted and I started Haub Photography in Ted’s garage and shortly thereafter in 1970, we founded H&H Color Lab my Wayne’s basement.. After printing my own work, I found that other photographers would entrust their printing to me and soon H&H Color Lab experienced its first expansion – from the basement up to the garage, extra bedroom and kitchen! By this time, I needed extra help so he recruited his first employee from the local donut shop who continues to work at H&H today. As the small lab grew to five employees, it was time to find a new home of it’s own, so H&H moved to it’s present location in Raytown, Missouri in 1974. H&H has never been stagnant, but has constantly continued to forge ahead as a leader and has embraced the changing times of the photographic industry paradigm shifts!
