Directed a team of Electrical, Optical, Mechanical and Software Engineers in the design of Bio-Medical Instrumentation.Grew pre-IPO start-up engineering staff into a 30+ person ISO/FDA-compliant engineering team. Recruited Hardware, Software, Optical & Mechanical Engineers, Technicians, and Tech Writers. Wrote applications in C++ and C# to control instrumentation, analyze data, and perform system modeling.Conceived and prototyped a CCD-based imaging particle detector using LED illumination that became Luminex’ best-selling instrument. Developed a suite of image processing algorithms to classify and quantify fluorescent particle signatures.

Design of software for desktop videoconferencing systems. Created graphical user interfaces in Visual C++ / MFC / ATL for video conferencing client applications. Wrote an I^2C low level driver in C to control an ISA bus-based audio multiplexer.

Performed Engineering services for various telecomm applications at this contract engineering firm. Researched the desktop videoconferencing market and created a high level design, written specifications and development schedule for a PCI based video/audio codec based on a TI 320C82 DSP.Studied H.323 draft specifications for a LAN-based implementation as an individual videoconferencing terminal, or multi-conference server. Studied DCT based compression methods including H.263, H.261, MPEG, and motion-JPEG to understand tradeoffs between network bandwidth and image quality.Created a software build environment and modified 16 bit Windows device drivers for an ISA based videoconferencing codec, modified high level application code for same using Visual C++. Debugged 56002 DSP firmware used to implement an audio codec.Wrote embedded C code for a DSC Communications SS7 gateway database.Wrote contract proposals for DNA telecomm engineering services.

Led a team of hardware and software engineers in the design of embedded PC based medical image capture devices.Transferred company design operations from New York to Texas in corporate move. Hired a new design team in Texas and managed phase out of remaining New York operations.Performed high level system analysis and designed a PCI based video frame-grabber with custom PLL generated pixel clock frequencies to 150 MHz. US patent 5,805,236 on this work granted in 1998. Wrote Visual C++ code using an object oriented methodology (Booch) to test, set up, and control the resultant video frame-grabber hardware.Led the design team in creation of NT device drivers and embedded 80C520 firmware. Brought in consultants to quickly bring self and staff up to speed on the new PCI bus and Windows NT device drivers.Managed project schedules, performed personnel performance appraisals.

Designed video capture devices to record medical images from diagnostic ultrasound machines and transmit them to network based film printers. Designed an ISA bus based video frame-grabber for capture and display of color medical images. Received US patent 5,805,236 on design work. Directed PCB layout for minimal noise on a mixed analog and digital PCB. Pixel clock generation via a programmable PLL allowed synchronous A/D sampling over multiple frequencies. Wrote control software using C++ and 8086 assembler.Taught video theory to field service personnel and directed Beta field installations. Directed technicians and software personnel.Wrote an object oriented software application in C++ for an automated video test fixture which greatly reduced manufacturing test and repair costs.

Research of high speed radiographic film / image scanning techniques.Designed systems to digitize a 16 bit analog stream at 2 MHz. Wrote software in "C" to perform calibration and compute statistical analysis of digitized images.Used Pspice to model analog circuitry, and ABEL to generate programmable logic.Wrote a DSP package in C to evaluate frequency domain performance of A/D converters. Investigated the performance of alternative high speed low noise digitization techniques using logarithmic amplifiers, and other logarithmic approximation schemes.

Design of spectrophotometer instrumentation. Designed a photo diode array detector / data acquisition board interfaced to a Z80. Directed PCB layout to minimize circuit noise.Generated control software in C / assembler. Designed a multiple stepper motor controller on the ISA bus, using an Intel 8032 for motor control and host communications. Performed a mathematical analysis of system inertial characteristics in order to select an optimal acceleration profile for a filter wheel and sample translation stage to maximize speed and positional accuracy. Modeled analysis results in a high level language, and wrote assembler code to implement the resultant acceleration / deceleration profile.Designed a xenon flash light source, with quench circuitry to regulate light output for precise exposure control in a reflective spectrophotometer.Used Pascal, C, and FORTRAN and assembly languages. Used Pspice for circuit modeling. Wrote theory and test procedures.

Design of radio communications systems.Designed a high efficiency AM voice modulator using pulsewidth modulation for a FAA NDB transmitter.Designed linear and switching power supplies, DC to DC, and DC to AC converters.Designed analog circuitry to compress, and band limit audio signals. Performance was required to military specifications including stability over wide temperature extrema.Supervised R & D technicians, coordinated product documentation, interfaced with vendors, and wrote service procedures.
