After Bas finished his PhD in computer science at Utrecht University in 2011, he brought together this team of music enthusiasts to create Chordify. Bas’ research focuses on music information retrieval, digital signal processing and machine learning. Bas is passionate about music, playing guitar, new technologies and entrepreneurship.

W. Bas de Haas finished his PhD thesis at Utrecht University in 2011. He works on Music Information Retrieval and specifically focuses on developing methods that are founded in music cognition and perception. Most of his contributions are concerned with the analysis and similarity of tonal harmony. Currently, Bas is involved in the MUSIVA project which investigates music similarity grounded in variation.

I've obtained a PhD in Music Information Retrieval at the department of Information and Computing Science of Utrecht University. Music Information Retrieval is a broad research area which aims to develop methods for keeping large repositories of musical data accessible and maintainable. Within MIR the similarity of musical information plays a central role. In my PhD thesis I investigate various ways to estimate similarity of tonal harmony between pieces of music. The developed similarity measures, which can be applied to both audio and symbolic data, are rooted in music cognitive as well as music theoretical models. The developed similarity measures are evaluated on large corpora of different musical styles ranging from Baroque to jazz and pop.
