About Chuck Saunders
Passionate about driving business success through strategic and tactical trademark and copyright legal practice excellence. An innovator in trademark practice management, I leverage in-house and external legal professionals and technology in unique ways to deliver high quality, cost-effective legal and business outcomes. Leading global teams, I've delivered outstanding results worldwide and across the trademark life cycle:• Selection, Adoption and Defense of New Branding. I advised on risks and opportunities for thousands of new brand elements. Sometimes the best advice was to select different trademarks and sometimes I injected entrepreneurial courage in decisions to launch at risk new blockbuster products with trademarks being attacked in legal proceedings by competitors and backed up those decisions with victories. • Trademark Prosecution/Portfolio & Practice Management. For large multinational clients I’ve right-sized trademark portfolios (and trademark teams and budgets/spending) to best achieve business goals. In some cases this meant building larger portfolios and in some cases it meant significantly reducing the portfolio. In all cases I bring an end-to-end lean approach for cost-effectiveness. Trademark portfolios should not exist in a vacuum, but rather be closely aligned with business needs.• Enforcement. In many countries and across several industries I have enforced my clients’ trademark rights against infringers. These actions have involved traditional word marks to non-traditional trademarks from the famous configuration of a beloved cheese cracker to a single color of a world-leading pharmaceutical product. Such actions added hundreds of millions of dollars to trademark owners’ bottom lines.• Business Transactions. I’ve negotiated trademark aspects of tens of billions of dollars in trademark-intensive business transactions (licenses, assignments, etc.). From the sale of a single trademark from a sole-proprietor to a large multi-national media powerhouse to complex worldwide transactions involving thousands of trademarks, I have minimized client risk and maximized deal value.Although pleased to be recognized as a leading in-house trademark attorney by World Trademark Review 300, I’m perhaps most proud of the legal and business people I have led and helped develop, and I delight to see them succeeding in many industries: food, entertainment/digital media, law firms, pharmaceuticals and many more.
