During the first years as a Naval Architect interaction was required with the potential shipyards for building the designs. I had some ideas and interest in coordinating this process I became responsible for the communication with the yards as Yard Coordinator. Main responsibilities are:• Preparation of tender packages for both client and shipyards• Promote and maintain relationships with shipyards worldwide• Verify design and quotation with shipyards• Set up a clear information exchange structure with shipyards• Define level of information/detail on drawings and reports for shipyardsShipyards concerned are mainly located in China, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Germany

At Huisman I started at the naval department. I started as a concept naval architect and made several concept designs for the offshore industry. Some designs have been developed in house based on marked developments without a potential client. Other designs have been developed in close contact with the client and as a result are Taylor made designs. and last some designs have been made for tenders.Tasks• Designs offshore construction vessels, e.g. crane vessel, pipe-lay vessel, drilling vessel. (concepts)• Project coordination concept and basic design• Coordinate work with subcontractors (Send proposals, review quotations, control progress)• Foster contact with Classification Societies for project review• Request and validate technical information from suppliers• Mentor to young project coordinators and concept engineers The design mainly consisted of:- Heavy lift vessels (traditional and innovative concepts)- Crane vessels (traditional and innovative concepts) - Pipelay vessels (Flex-lay, Rigid lay or S-lay)- Well intervention vessels- Drill ships- and multi-purpose vesselsThe concept designs varied from small sales packages to full tender and basic design packages. Type of package is in general depending on the client’s wishes and the time available.

Main task are the pre-project or conceptual phase for possible new building projects for the different offshore divisions within Fugro. In the pre-project phase the requirement and desires of the operational companies are translated into layouts and specifications. After contract signing the management of the project will be dealt with on behalf of the owners.Part of the small team developing the Fugro Standard Survey Vessel. The main characteristics of the vessel is the flexible infrastructure.The main functions of this new vessel are:- Hydrography (multi-beam bathymetry to full ocean depth)- Geophysical survey (shallow seismic and sonar)- Geotechnical investigation (seabed sampling)New building projects which have been developed and finalized so far are the Fugro Searcher and Fugro Galaxy.
