I am a mathematical physicist with an innovation bug and a passion for applying esoteric concepts in mathematics and physics to practical problems. However, all analysis is critically dependent on data integrity, quantity and density, and therefore I learnt to design and implement industrially robust monitoring systems to deliver continuous and consistent data streams.I have also been back-analysing and thinking about the rock mass response to mining over the last 15 years, using a variety of techniques from stock-in-trade statistical tools to sophisticated inversion and clustering methods. Application of fundamental physics to mining-induced seismicity. The project involved site studies and data collection from large in-situ seismic monitoring systems at deep-level gold mines and an Australian longwall coal mine.Several automated pattern recognition techniques such as neural networks and genetic algorithms were implemented and investigated.Outcomes of the project included techniques for quantifying seismic pattern recognition using nonparametric statistics, techniques for combining pattern recognition and criticality to time–to-failure analyses of seismic parameters.

Feasibility of using portable of micro seismic monitoring systems to predict goafing in coal mines. Implementation of a mobile, intrinsically safe seismic monitoring system in fiery mines. Additionally, techniques developed in the project “Seismology for rock burst prediction” were applied to the data. The work involved the installation and managing of a microseismic system at a stooping colliery in South Africa.The outcomes of the project demonstrated the feasibility of goaf monitoring using a microseismic system, as well as the existence of recognizable patterns in acoustic emission prior to goafing. The project led to three further projects after I left. Additionally, the project served to directly stimulate the development of the GoafWarn monitoring units trialed in New Zealand in January 2004.
