★ Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation studies of laser-excited high-energy-density (HED) plasmas:....► implemented particle tracking in PIC simulation code PSC;....► applied the particle tracking to identifying particle energization by Fermi mechanism, direct X-line acceleration, and magnetic island compression in magnetic reconnection in HED plasmas;....► studied magnetic field generation in HED plasmas.

★ Developed a phase space optimization technique for δf particle simulations [Deng2013] that saved 75% and 95% computing time in 2D and 5D simulations, respectively.★ Contributed to open source projects: 2 patches to PETSc and 1 patch to fabricate.★ Modeling and simulations of nonlinear energetic particle dynamics and Alfvén eigenmodes, with acceleration by the optimization technique.

★ Joined the development of a large-scale fusion simulation code GTC:....► implemented a poloidal filter that can screen out noise and improve numerical stability;....► derived and implemented equilibrium current in the electromagnetic gyrokinetic formulation for GTC, which completes the formulation and enables GTC to simulate current-driven waves/instabilities;....► maintained the PETSc Poisson solver and provided its technical support for other team members.★ Used SLEPc to develop ALCON for calculating Alfvén continuous spectra, which are important for identifying Alfvén eigenmodes in fusion plasmas.★ Attended management and maintenance of local workstations and cluster.

★ Teaching three quarters of undergraduate classes, including basic physics, basic physics lab, classical physics, and classical physics lab.★ Teaching part of a graduate course, special topics of plasma, covering topics of gyrokinetic formulation with equilibrium current, reduction of gyrokinetic formulation to ideal MHD theory in long wavelength limit, and Alfvén continuum and Alfvén eigenmode gaps.
