Profile bio

About William Magee

I have an allergy to red tape and am constantly looking to introduce Lean and Agile methods to eliminate waste and inefficient processes. I have the innate ability to detect and remove waste and look to strike the balance between safety, compliance, productivity and efficiency. When there is an anomaly or a unique situation, I bring the ability to find the most efficient solution, get my team on board and make it happen. I believe now is always the best time to take action and believe in proactive planning ahead of reactive response whenever possible. You will see in my work experience detailed below that I have had a very successful career in the United States Air Force, where as an officer, I reached the rank of Colonel. At this level of leadership, my focus is often on developing strategy and overseeing program implementation. Though I have often had to look at the big picture of operational strategy, such as staffing allocation and career path planning for 14,000 personnel at 43 organizations, I never lose sight of taking care of my people. I am a naturally jovial and gregarious person who rarely meets a stranger. As I prepare to wrap up my USAF career in June of 2024, I am looking for a new opportunity to leverage my operations leadership skills in managing high-volume production environments with the highest levels of efficiency. I can be reached at williamdmagee23@gmail.com to discuss any opportunities where you believe I can add value.

Senior Director Of Maintenance Operations (Group Commander)

Current

United States

I led 25 senior leaders and directed all aspects of operations, HR and programs for a maintenance organization with 575 personnel that maintained the flight-readiness of 20 C-130J aircraft. With a $21M operational budget, I forecasted, allocated and monitored funds to optimize resource efficiency while overseeing a $20.7M flying hour program. I am available for a new opportunity beginning August of 2023.➥ As a strategic planner, I established long-term strategy, supply chain forecasts and staffing allocation plans that effectively and efficiently enabled more than 350K annual maintenance hours. When special deployments and projects were required, I planned and managed resources including equipment and staffing. ➥ After I took over an underperforming team with up to 38% staffing shortages, I led the team to their highest level of production in 20 years. Not only did aircraft availability increase 35%+, but we also outperformed our flying hour program by 15%.➥ I optimized program performance through proactive supply chain forecasting, efficient staffing and maintenance scheduling, improving employee relations and team building and focusing on process improvements. ➥ Serving as a facility manager, I oversaw the maintenance, security and safety of 14 facilities that included aircraft hangers, office space and HazMat storage as well as inspection and fabrication shops.

Dec 2021 - Present

Maintenance Program Policy Director

I led a 40-person team at HQ AF Reserve Command that wrote and codified maintenance policies and technical instructions. The directives impacted 14K maintenance technicians across 50+ specialties that maintained operability of 365 fighter, attack, air refueling, airlift and ISR aircraft.➥ I led aircraft modernization efforts by evaluating technical directives and maintenance policies and drafting new maintenance procedures. ➥ Collaborating with a 90-person project team, I revised logistics sustainment plan for the USAF fleet, managing aircraft posturing and 3-day combat readiness metrics that enabled informed decision making. This project is currently being rolled out USAF-wide.➥ I created data-driven policy by utilizing KPIs and other data analysis tools. These policies enabled executive leaders to make decisions about fleet right-sizing.➥ I led and mentored career field managers that oversaw 14K+ technicians located at 43 CONUS locations. I directed training and mentorship programs and career path planning and coordinated with headquarters on staffing allocation, succession planning and payroll forecasting.➥ After implementing technician cross-training and proactive recruiting, I improved staffing levels from 62% to 80% in 6 months. ➥ Serving as a project manager for special projects, I oversaw initiatives that enabled cutting edge ideas and the testing of new procedures. Highlights include:> Led the first ever Agile Combat Employment initiative that enabled a cross-trained agile team to provide combat field support for MQ-9 assets. The procedures behind the project were recognized by the Air Force Chief of Staff.> Created framework for one of the largest staffing restructures in history. This 3-year plan re-classified 1,743 personnel and added 635 FT employees the 1st year. > Planned and led Crashed Damaged Disabled Recovery project that transported the remains of a MQ-9 asset. By responding in < 22 hours, I preserved 1,500 pieces of evidence.

Mar 2018 - Nov 2022

Director Of Maintenance Operations

Leading teams of up to 450 technicians that inspected, maintained and repaired aircraft assets, I oversaw all aspects of operations including HR and staffing allocation, program management, quality assurance, strategic planning, resource allocation and forecasting and special projects. I guided the team’s culture and motivated personnel to exceed expectations.➥ As a visible leader, I provided coaching and mentorship while clearly conveying standards and expectations. This leadership style was key to never failing an operational readiness inspection. ➥ In order to support operational objectives, I developed long-term strategy, defined short-term priorities, conducted risk analysis, identified deficiencies and introduced corrective measures.➥ I was selected to lead special projects or innovations. Twice, I set up brand new F-22 programs including facilities, equipment, staffing and budgeting. In preparation for the Iraqi invasion and in support of combat operations, I was selected to set up a maintenance and refueling facility.
