Work involves a research program to characterize the macromolecular components of pathogenic bacteria of military relevance to determine their roles in pathogenesis, expression during disease and their use in methods for rapid pathogen detection, diagnosis and identification. Knowledge of concepts and techniques in microbiology, immunology, and biochemistry. Plans and performs research including but not limited to the following: isolates and chemically characterizes cellular components of bacterial biological warfare (BW) agents; subjects purified components to various biochemical and immunological assays to determine chemical and antigenic composition; establishes and maintains expertise, reagents, and equipment for bacterial identification; develops new approaches to bacterial identification and implements them for rapid detection of BW agents; studies use of and sensitivity of various detection methodologies and diagnostic assays; and supports other government agencies in dealing with BW agents, in special investigations and in analyzing clinical and environmental samples.Maintenance and characterization of a dangerous pathogens microbial culture collection. Works in biosafety level 3 laboratories handling highly pathogenic microorganisms. Characterization includes the use of automated microbial identification systems, including phenotypic systems and fatty acid methyl esterase gas chromatography. Applies broad theoretical knowledge or hands-on experience in such disciplines as microbiology, immunology and molecular biology in performing different aspects of research project. Responsibilities include support for the laboratory quality assurance program. Performs standard molecular biological techniques. Experience and knowledge of basic laboratory skills, laboratory safety, instrument operation and basic maintenance, reagent preparation, agent specific analytical methods, data interpretation, and quality assurance.

As a contracted research associate at USAMRIID, worked in the combined branches of Field Operations and Training (FOT) and Special Pathogen Sample Test Laboratory (SPSTL). Duties include QA/QC; develop, implement, and supervise research projects; coordinate and evaluate training needs for multiple departments, outside government agencies, and DOD; technical supervisor and reviewer of data for the SPSTL in the areas of immunology and molecular biology; and coordinate, supervise, and instruct in the US Army’s only Field Identification of Biological Warfare Agents (FIBWA) course. Perform and instruct in various laboratory techniques such as sample processing and shipping; DNA and RNA extraction from various mediums; Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR); reverse transcriptase PCR (rtPCR); gel electrophoresis; Enzyme Linked Immuno-sorbant Assay (ELISA), basic microbiology, Immuno-Histo Chemistry (IHC); Electrochemiluminescent (ECL), and Taq-man PCR. Evaluate product developments for field use by planning and participating in field trials. Transfer new technology and techniques to the end user from the developer. Prepare test samples to evaluate customer labs for proficiency and accuracy. Travel abroad to inspect and certify forward deployed laboratories and personnel. Maintain QA/QC records on fielded labs. Provide ongoing proficiency training. Provide technical support to deployed units. Collaborate with other agencies (Program Executive Office for Bio-Defense, USAF, WRAIR, DHS, and FBI) on diagnostic developments and laboratory operations.

Clinical Laboratory Technician

As a Medical Laboratory NCO in the US Army’s only Theater Army Medical Laboratory (a forward deployable unit) performed ELISA, PCR, IHC and microbiology for the detection and identification of various endemic and infectious diseases and biological warfare threat agents. Worked in BSL-3 laboratory. Performed DNA and RNA purification, qualitative and quantitative PCR-ELISA, cell culture, and immuno-flourescent antibody staining (IFA). Interpret and recorded data. Prepared reports, using a number of different computer programs. Coordinated efforts between product developers and end users. Maintained supply and equipment inventory; performed first echelon maintenance on instrumentation; prepared specimens for shipment; participated in technical problem solving and quality control monitoring. Trained technicians in all aspects of laboratory operations and procedures. Deployed to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Desert Thunder/Southern Watch. Served as NCOIC of the Pathogen Assessment Team during the operation supervising 3 technicians.
