Joined the (then Manchester) Guardian as a reporter in 1955, after a year on the Irish Times in Dublin. Literary editor 1959-90, writing extensively about the relationship between politics and literature in different political cultures Guardian Fellow, Nuffield College, Oxford, doing research on the freeing of the press in the formerly Communist countries of central & eastern Europe (published as Press and Politics in East Central Euope, 1992). Edited and introduced Dusan Hamsik's Writers Against Rulers,1971, also An Embarrassment of Tyrannies: 25 Years of Index on Censorship, 1997). Articles and reviews in Index on Censorship, the New Statesman, the Hungarian Quarterly etc.
