Dani Boi

Melbourne

When not at my day job or producing events, I was a performance artist and MC, going by the name of Dani Boi. My performances aimed to educate and entertain, on topics such as consent, masculinity, and genderfluidity. Through this work, I am published in The Guardian (linked below), Archer Magazine's THEY/THEIRS issue, and have featured on Triple J, PBS, and JOY 94.9. A short documentary was made in 2018, in conjunction with Screen Australia and Film Victoria, featuring reflections on Dani Boi and moving portraits of other nonbinary community members, and I was subsequently named LGBT+ Artist of the Year at the annual GLOBE awards.

Events Producer

The Cocoa Butter Club Melbourne

Melbourne, Australia

Upon returning to Melbourne in 2016 after 1.5 years in San Francisco, I was inspired to create social change and transformative spaces through performing arts. My co-producer Krishna Ishta and I founded the Australian chapter of The Cocoa Butter Club, a cabaret-style performance night that centres Indigenous and/or People of Colour, created by Sadie Sinner the SongBird in London. The environment was joyous and uncensored, with queer people of colour encouraged to sit up the front and take up space, and performers experiencing an antidote to the tokenism that often exists in performing arts line ups. Our venues were all wheelchair accessible with shows being Auslan interpreted. We had an allocation of $0 No One Turned Away for Lack of Funds tickets and 10% of profits were donated to WAR (Warriors of Aboriginal Resistance). We held the event at a variety of venues including sold out shows at the Melba Spiegeltent, Fairfax Theatre (Arts Centre Melbourne) and guest curation for Nocturnal at Melbourne Museum, GLOBE awards, and Heaps Gay Opening night for Melbourne Music Week at ACMI.

Business Development & Walking Tour Guide

San Francisco

Wild SF Tours is an alternative, civil rights focused walking tour company led by artist guides. Working closely with the two founders, I conducted a series of business improvement projects to assist the growth and sustainability of the small business.Design ResearchI conducted human-centred design research to inform the restructure of our tour schedule and private tour flow. These approaches were inspired by User Experience Design and included user interviews, focus groups, and customer journey mapping.CoachingI coached the founders on how to delegate and use their time and skills effectively. This resulted in a clear definition of their roles and skills, having weekly strategy meetings and separate innovation meetings, and implementing workflow tools such as Slack and Trello.Product Development and ProcessingI documented and streamlined our onboarding of new tour guides, and created a system for quoting private tours. I also designed two new tours - a San Francisco overview tour and an LGBT+ bar crawl. Employee EngagementI created opportunities for the tour guides to connect, including a private Facebook group and social outings. I scheduled the staff meetings with robust, time-stamped agendas. I also implemented weekly 1-1 check ins and created a feedback matrix for the founders to conduct performance reviews, and also for the guides to provide feedback to the founders. My work at Wild SF was flexible, dynamic and rewarding. It also allowed me to explore other projects such as performance art and workshop facilitation. I improved my public speaking through being a weekly tour guide for the Castro district, focussing on the 1970s Gay rights movement and contemporary LGBT+ issues.

Business Improvement Analyst

Melbourne, Australia

Being a part of Personal Bank's Business Improvement team has given me the opportunity to apply our specialist methodology to solve problems within the business, including NAB Broker Variations and Advantedge Mortgage Retention. I appreciate the opportunity to experience projects end to end, incorporating elements of strategy, current state analysis, future state design, risks & issues, change, communications, delivery and monitoring. I particularly enjoy applying a Customer Experience lens to our design, and am confident in senior stakeholder management and working to a project schedule. In addition to my core role, I co-founded the Empower in Business Management community, whereby I led a cross-enterprise working group to plan and deliver two launch events in Sydney and Melbourne, sponsored by our General Manager. The aim of these events was to provide role models and open discussion around overcoming gender stereotypes in career and life, and to inspire employees to be part of peer-support Lean In Circles to continue their growth in 'bringing their whole selves to work'. 16 Lean In Circles of 8-12 people each were started as a result of the event, and are continuing strong today.I was also an ambassador of The Village (NAB Co-working space) and regularly ran a workshop called 'So You Think You Know Gender & Sexuality?! The Quiz' for NAB employees and Village members (customers). I gave a Ted-style talk to over 150 NAB staff members about this workshop; it can be found below.

Jun 2014 - May 2015

Graduate (Personal Banking)

Melbourne, Australia

The NAB Graduate program gave me an excellent breadth and depth of experience. I enjoyed the frontline exposure of being a Servicing banker (Call Centre), where I quickly became a top performer and coach of new bankers. I went on to create a Yammer Engagement project, where I achieved a 30% uplift in membership to the internal social network, with a sustained increase in instances of sharing best practice and collaboration. During my Technology rotation, I performed a Current State Analysis of a customer and employee pain point that I had experienced first-hand during her rotation in the Customer Contact Centre - Disputes resolution. I also became very active in the Diversity & Inclusion space, performing in NAB's annual Great Debate and helping organize the Midsumma Program Launch with the Pride@NAB (LGBT) network. In my final rotation I worked in the 3rd Party Mortgage Distribution (Broker) space, performing excel analysis and creating communications tools and plans for the business. I went on to secure a permanent role in Business Improvement for the area.
