Webly Bowles, a licensed Oregon architect with 20+ years experience, applies a systems thinking approach to decarbonizing buildings. She's crafted sustainable programs for global corporations and state-wide residential initiatives, yielding tangible results. Graduating in 2003 with a Bachelor of Architecture and a minor in Business Administration from the University of Oregon, Webly holds various sustainable building certifications. She began her architecture career in Portland, transitioning to consulting during the recession, aiding international retailers in enhancing store sustainability. Later, she worked as an energy analyst, aiding affordable multifamily housing.Currently, Webly serves as Associate Director of Codes and Policy at New Buildings Institute (NBI). She spearheads carbon lifecycle research, shapes policy strategies, and aligns with jurisdictional energy goals. A fervent advocate of integrated design, Webly speaks at conferences and facilitates charrettes for effective carbon-neutral building implementation. Her research extends to embodied carbon in codes, extreme heat mitigation policy, and energy benchmarking for cultural institutions. She also coordinates with national non-profits to collectively reduce building emissions.Webly's hands-on architectural background enables her to translate technical requisites into practical high-performance building design and operations guidance. She shares her expertise through presentations, resources, and tools for design, construction, and operation professionals. In her spare time, she enjoys riding her Vespas around town to new vegan ice cream shops. She also started Sustainable Building Week in Portland to raise awareness and provide education about sustainable design and construction. Webly also serves on the Oregon Sustainability Board.
