    Ph.D. Spray combustion under different ambient conditions • Characterize the spray combustion flame under varied ambient oxygen concentrations and temperatures based on multi-band flame emissions, propose conceptual flame models for low temperature combustion and conventional combustion, enhance the understanding of spray combustion process, and offer a comprehensive database for the validation of combustion simulation. • Complete the two-color pyrometry measurement for the spray combustion of diesel, jet-A, and biomass-based fuel in order to determine the soot temperature and soot concentration (KL factor), and identify the optimized ambient condition to reduce soot and NOx simultaneously.• Study the effects of different loads and pilot injection on spray combustion for diesel, jet-A, and biomass-based fuel based on the multi-band flame emissions and the two-color pyrometry, fundamentally illuminate the mechanism of reducing soot and NOx as multiple injection and pilot injection are applied in an engine combustion system. • Evaluate the effect of fuel blends (dieseline) on the soot formation of the spray combustion process under different ambient conditions based on the two-color pyrometry.

Characterization of gas exchange process of the Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (HICE) • Accomplished the data acquisition of engine test within a wide working range in order to confirm the parameters in HICE control strategy for a higher power density and lower emission, such as air flow rate, combustion pressure trace, and power.• Implemented one-dimension simulation for HICE using GT-power and identified the pressure boundaries for the gas flow system. • Created the moving mesh for one complete cycle by using Pro/E and ICEM-CFD and calculated the gas exchange process of HICE using Fire software. • Analyzed the distributions of velocity and mixture concentration at different time sequences of the exchange process and delivered feasible solutions for increasing power density and avoiding the backfire.• Investigated the whole complete engine cycle in terms of combustion pressure, temperature distribution and NOx emission and presented the possible maximum fuel injection width for increasing power density of HICE.
