About Tim Weiss

I study the global startup movement in rapidly evolving digital economies. I am interested in the question under what conditions organizations emerge and scale (or fail to do so) in particular contexts. Why? My “home base” is in management and organization theory and I am working on an organizational lens to understanding socio-economic change and progress. How do I do it? My toolbox encompasses qualitative methods augmented by ethnographic techniques and a long-term commitment to a context. The outcome, thus far? In 2014, I have conducted a large-scale study of the startup scene in Kenya’s digital economy (also known as Digital Nyika) which has led to the publication of the edited volume Digital Kenya: An Entrepreneurial Revolution in the Making and several working papers.Currently, I am the shadow of 20 high-impact individuals in Kenya who I accompany over time (for a total of 8 years) to track their entrepreneurial journey. In my free time, I wrestle with questions that deal with Africa’s digital futures, in particular the impact — both opportunities and challenges — AI will have on the organizational infrastructure and the future of work.
