About Wendy Firestone

In 1991, I moved to a new town and answered an add in the newspaper for a job that asked, "Do you want to make a difference?" I was hooked. For the next 25 years, I developed my skills to become a true asset in the non-profit arena.     ► Participated in all recruitment, hiring, orientation, training, evaluation, support, disciplinary actions, and when needed, termination of all direct care staff.► Conducted intakes, assessments and program development for 130 individuals with developmental disabilities participating in Washoe Arc programs and services.► Wrote goals and plans, including behavior management plans when needed, for all participants. Created data collection systems, and monthly reporting structure for government contracts.► Supervised all staff documentation, data collection, and progress notes.► Maintained participant files in compliance with all regulations.► Attended quarterly meetings for all participants to review programs and services, goals and progress. ► Acted as a liaison between Washoe Arc and participant’s families and advocates, our local Sierra Regional Center’s Service Coordinators and other community providers.During my time as case manager for Washoe Arc, I received extensive training in Positive Behavioral Supports. I infused the philosophy of looking at each person with a disability as an individual with unique strengths, abilities, interests, goals and desires into the programs of Washoe Arc. All behavior management programs are now written from a PBS viewpoint. This has helped Washoe Arc decrease inappropriate behaviors and has increased the overall success of our programs.I began a program of increased community involvement. I helped develop several community based job opportunities, as well as, greatly increased the number of community based leisure and recreational opportunities for the individuals in our programs.My seven years of Case Management at Washoe Arc helped build the foundation of my relationships with Sierra Regional Center and other community providers. It helped me gain an understanding of the connections in the disability community, as well as, the various funding structures.
