My research interests focus on human motivation and the contexts and strategies that facilitate high quality motivation. My research, in particular, examines the effects of home and school environments on children's motivation. I have developed a preventive parenting intervention to help parents provide motivationally facilitative environments that increase well-being for children. My work has been funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the Spencer Foundation, and the William T. Grant Foundation. I served as a fellow at NICHD in 2014-2015 and I currently serve on two American Psychological Association Committees- Children, Youth and Families and the Coalition for Psychology in Schools and Education. I have written three books, The Psychology of Parental Control: How Well-Meant Parenting Backfires (with Kathy Seal, Taylor and Francis), Pressured Parents, Stressed-Out Kids: Dealing with Competition While Raising a Successful Child (Prometheus), and a new book, Motivation Myth Busters: Science-Based Strategies to Boost Motivation in Yourself and Others (with Ben Heddy and Frank Worrell, APA Press).
