Wendy Mullin is a multi-disciplinary creative and emotionally intelligent leader (before that was even a term!) focussing on projects in fashion, film, interiors, and sustainability. A native of Chicago, Wendy founded Built by Wendy while studying at the University of Kansas where she sold her handmade clothing from a laundry line in her front yard. She moved to New York in 1992 to study at FIT. In 1994 she opened Built by Wendy shops in the back of two downtown record stores while working as a costume designer and stylist for music videos by bands such as Sleater Kinney and Pavement, and designed for Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth's X-Girl collection as well as Beastie Boys Mike D's X-Large clothing line. In 1998, Wendy opened her first flagship retail store in the Little Italy, NYC.From 2004-2006, she was the Creative Director for Wrangler Jeans/VF Corporation where she created a premium denim line called Wrangler47. In 2006, Wendy penned the popular Sew U series of instructional sewing and pattern making books through Random House followed by a line of commercial sewing patterns called Built by You through Simplicity Pattern Company.In the mid-aughts she opened flagship stores in Brooklyn, Los Angeles and San Francisco in addition to global wholesale distribution. In 2013 she launched Built by Wendy Kids followed by a capsule collection called Soft Rock in 2014. In 2016, Built by Wendy launched exclusively online at www.builtbywendy.com.In 2019, Wendy launched Departing Dearly, a resource website for "all things death and dying, curated guides and resources for the inevitable" focussing on green burials and the death positive movement.In 2022, she co-founded Kiosk, a sustainable mobile utility startup in Los Angeles and a Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator portfolio company. Kiosk brings renewable power, responsible waste management, clean water, communications, first aid, supplies and shelter to people working and playing on-location. Kiosk serves the film industry, crew support for grid upgrades, disaster response, and remote events. She is a member of the Costume Designer's Guild.
