Wendy Trusler is an interdisciplinary visual artist, designer, and writer. Balancing a life of art and food for over twenty years Trusler has cooked and catered across Canada and internationally, food styled for film and television and developed an art practice that encompasses visual art, curatorial projects, performance, film, and writing. Much of her work examines the roles symbol and language play in coding memory, and the ways in which recollections are organized into what we understand as history. Shaped by the experience of having lived in wild places, ideas around ecology, continuity and regeneration play out in her material choices and the physicality of her work, as well as how it brings people together. Recent projects include The Antarctic Book of Cooking and Cleaning (Vauve Press 2013, Harpers Design 2015); Collective Vision, an on-going public art project in the Mental Health Services Department of the Peterborough Regional Health Centre and Voices at Hand, an archival-oriented performance piece that has been mounted in venues across Ontario and reached audiences in 26 countries.Trusler’s design practice traces a similar orbit to her artistic impulses as she explores the potential inherent within found materials and reclaimed objects, creating design pieces —furniture and handmade works that have the feel of contemporary antiques— pieces that are rustic, warm, and refined. Trusler is an Associate of the Ontario College of Art and holds a B.A. in History from the University of Western Ontario. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, was short-listed for the Taste Canada Food Writing Awards for Best Culinary Narrative in 2014 and awarded a Chalmers Art Fellowship in 2015. Trusler currently works as Public Art Facilitator for the City of Peterborough.
