I have over twenty years experience working in public health nutrition and health promotion and over 15 years experience in volunteering and leading community advocacy groups and hold an Australian Progress Fellowship in campaigning and advocacy.I have led strategic research projects to underpin advocacy efforts for better food labelling systems and the reduction of food marketing directed to children. I have developed and supported communication and advocacy campaigns in relation to food policy issues, prepared reports and submissions for key decision makers including government bodies about a range of food policy issues and maintained an up-to-date and expert knowledge of nutrition and associated issues as it affects cancer control. I have led community-based advocacy efforts including both political engagement and grassroots community support. My area of research focus is food policy to support healthy eating and prevent obesity, and thereby lower chronic disease and cancer risk. I have published extensively and presented research, at both national and international conferences. My consumer research has assisted to inform advocacy and advise front-of-pack labelling committees, including the Commonwealth government’s advisory committees, particularly the Technical Design Working Group that informed the development of the Health Star Rating scheme, an interpretive front of pack nutrition labelling system. In 2017-19 I was an invited member of the Australian Government convened Health Star Rating Technical Advisory Group whose role was to analyse and review the performance of the Health Star Rating Calculator and respond to technical issues and related matters and provide advice to support the five year formal review of the Health Star Rating system. My research on food marketing, particularly on the amount of food marketing on Australian television has been used to inform advocacy documents including Tipping the Scales: Australian Obesity Prevention Consensus. My reputation as an experienced campaigner on food marketing to children and the key role Cancer Council NSW has played in advancing this issue will ensure this research plays an important role in providing evidence-based advice to contribute to policy development in Australia. I have had a media role communicating relevant research relating to nutrition and cancer risk and acted as a Cancer Council Australia spokesperson on food labelling, food policy and other nutrition issues.
