Wendy Wilton began work as a policy support specialist with NEMRC in May 2021 drawing on her experience in municipal finance and management. She expects to help Vermont's communities with best practices in financial reporting and audit compliance.Previously, Wilton was appointed as the VT Farm Service Agency State Executive Director by President Donald Trump in November 2017. As SED Wilton will lead the agency’s 40 employees who support the state’s farmers with loans, disaster relief, farm loss protection and conservation programs. Prior to the appointment Wilton was re-elected to her sixth term as Rutland City Treasurer in March 2017. Wilton successfully led a re-organization of the city's accounting and finances resulting in greater accountability and improved fiscal management. The city's financial statements achieved unqualified opinions for FY 2011through 2016, including the single audit for federal expenditures, for the first time in 32 years. Wilton was honored as the 2012 Vermont Municipal Treasurer of the Year by the Vermont Municipal Clerks' and Treasurers' Association based on her work in improving Rutland's finances and reporting.As Rutland’s treasurer Wilton also served as Tax Collector and Delinquent Tax Collector, an ex-officio board member of the Rutland Redevelopment Authority, and Pension Commissioner for the City of Rutland.Wilton ran for Vermont State Treasurer in the 2012 general election as a first time candidate garnering 40% of the vote against an incumbent and two minor party candidates. She ran on a platform of financial sustainability, including pension reform, and greater transparency in finances of the state. Prior to serving as Rutland’s treasurer Wilton represented Rutland County in the Vermont legislature.
