About Wendy Andersen Ph.D. Mpcbt(Aac)

Traveling or living abroad can be an incredibly rewarding experience. It can also create (or exacerbate) mental health challenges. Be it culture shock, language barriers, or the lack of family and friends nearby, you may find yourself needing some support. Working with a qualified CBT therapist can help you learn new skills and techniques to confront the mental health issues that you are facing.I specialise in working with clients who live outside of the community where they grew up ("ex-pats"). I have lived abroad since I was a child, in several continents/countries over the years, with 17 years in Spain and five in the former Soviet Union. I understand the challenges that living in a foreign environment entails, such as difficulties understanding the local language, or being far from family and friends. Not knowing how local mental health care services work can be particularly challenging. Beyond that - each client is unique and therapy is tailored to their needs - be it addiction, trauma, anxiety, depression, or difficulties adapting to life-changing events.Prior to retraining as a therapist, I worked for twenty years on development projects in the former Soviet Union - post conflict reconciliation, open society and media development, as well as working as a documentary film maker for Aljazeera English. I hold a docorate and an undergraduate degree in International Relations. The jump from international relations to individual relations has been a fascinating and rewarding challenge. I feel privileged to be serving the local community in this way.

British qualified CBT psychotherapist, member of the BABCP. I specialise in working with "expats" - clients that live outside their home country. I have a particular interest in this area because I have lived as an expat as a child and as an adult - in many countries from Europe, to the US, to Central Asia. Such clients present a wide variety of issues, but they all share the complication that they tend not to have the typical support system of friends, family, even medical support in their language, that they might have back home. This can add to the sense of isolation that many clients feel in combating their issues. I have experience treating clients for PTSD (and complex PTSD), anxiety/stress, depression (monopolar and bipolar), self harm, eating disorders, relationship therapy, gender dysphoria, addiction, suicidal behaviour, phobias, panic attacks, health anxiety, borderline personality disorders and substance misuse. Outside of my clinical work, I have a particular research interest in trauma suffered by journalists. It ties together my earlier career with my present career.
