Hydrographic And Meteorological Officer

Two deployments to the Arabian Gulf allowed me to hone my scientific skills in an operational environment. Alongside the standard daily weather forecasts I was providing to up to 15 units at a time, I was also processing and analysing water column data to allow better configuration of SONAR equipment. Regularly praised by both UK and US Commanding Officers, I forged a strong relationship with the Mine Hunting ships to develop a seamless flow of information, something that was critical to successful exercises in preparation for live operations. I created procedures that are still in place today. Additionally, I provided tactical environmental training to operators which was always well received. On return to the UK I attended several seminars to discuss my achievements in the Arabian Gulf which has led to a change in the way the Royal Navy provides their training of future HM Officers. In addition to my environmental role, I was in charge of collating lessons identified to ensure exercises and operations were conducted successfully. This flow of information required careful management of people and information.
