I'm a strategic thinker, collaborative colleague and idea person who uses research, analysis, planning and writing skills to generate revenue at one of the world's leading journalism nonprofits. I manage the grant-seeking work and foundation relations at The Poynter Institute, a school and strategy center for journalism based in St. Petersburg, Fla. I came to Poynter as a part-time member of the faculty in 2004 to run programs for high school students, a role that took me back to my own roots as a journalist. I'm a marketer who has led two marketing departments, so I've learned to be nimble and creative in an industry in flux (some would say crisis). I've developed social marketing strategies and fostered community in Linked In and Facebook groups. I'm a proven project manager who launched the work to reimagine our digital footprint, built around a Salesforce database, our industry-leading website and learning management system. I love Tampa Bay, having lived, worked and played tennis on both sides of the Bay since 1985.I got my start as a high school journalist and wish for today's teens an equally enriching experience, with no prior review and plenty of pizza.Skills:‐ Business strategy and analysis- Idea generation for partnerships and growth- Grant proposal writing- Foundation and donor stewardship- Meeting deadlines- Research/impact survey design and implement- Integrated marketing strategy‐ Spreadsheets, database work

Director Of Foundation RelationsPoynter Institute Mar 2023 - PresentUsI lead Poynter's work with foundation partners, funding Poynter teaching, fact-checking and other initiatives through relationships with local, national and international funders. This work requires monitoring and reporting on about 20 active projects ranging in value from $10,000 to $5-million plus prospecting through outreach to dozens more to secure new funding. This is a part-time role, crafted at my request, and tightens my focus as part of a larger business development team. I am a leader on the implementation team for Poynter's Salesforce database and a resource for colleagues on using Salesforce for customer insights, sales tracking and relationship building. I sell advertising on Poynter's website and newsletters, and I manage our partnership with Editor & Publisher on the Media Job Board, one of the news industry's largest employment marketplaces. I partner with the marketing and major gifts teams to meet fundraising goals for Poynter's annual gala, The Bowtie Ball. -
Director Of AdvancementPoynter Institute Jan 2017 - Mar 2023UsI was Poynter's first advancement director, responsible for all fundraising efforts (major gifts, the donor pipeline, grants and sponsorships), the marketing department and new business development, including the sale of custom teaching to newsrooms and other clients across the country. Through my leadership, we developed strategies for stewarding major donors, developed a donor pipeline through email outreach and events, implemented a Salesforce database and built a successful event marketing and fundraising effort through community conversations and the Bowtie Ball. I led this team of six people even as I retained responsibility for Poynter's grant writing and foundation stewardship, building relationships with dozens of foundations and corporate partners from local banks and place-based foundations to Facebook, Google and the Ford, Knight and MacArthur foundations. I continued to serve as Poynter's primary grant writer and worked with colleagues to launch a number of high-profile new initiatives, including the MediaWise digital news literacy program (through a grant I wrote in partnership with Google) and programs on leading digital change (in partnership with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting). I served as interim development director for a year during this time, managing relationships with our Foundation Board, setting fundraising records for our annual gala and stewarding existing and new major donors, several of whom went on to make $100,000+ gifts to the institute.I implemented Poynter's Salesforce database and served as its first internal champion, creating the key dashboard that tracks Poynter revenues and identifies key donors and institutional partners. -
Grants Manager, Faculty And High School Journalism Program DirectorPoynter Institute Oct 2004 - Jan 2017UsI was Poynter's first grants manager, responsible for writing and administering grants, writing reports, building budgets and creating impact measurement and tracking schema. I secured funding for reporting workshops, leadership programs and journalism entrepreneurship initiatives. My marketing experience and business planning skills made me an asset to the teaching team for Poynter entrepreneurial journalism workshops. I hosted and moderated webinars on Poynter's e-learning platform, News University. I helped build a self-directed course on advising student media and served as faculty for that course, teaching "live" online sessions. As director of the High School Journalism Program, I taught reporting and writing basics in workshops at Poynter and in local classrooms, as well as at regional and national student journalism conventions (FSPA and JEA/NSPA). I expanded Poynter's summer program to a year-round experience for local students, adding specialty camps to help editors and advisers take their newspapers online. I worked with the high school programs until 2016, and program alumni stay in touch, reporting back on careers in media, law, science and more. -
