- Contributions to the development of third generation mobile communication systems (UMTS) in collaborative European research projects and contributions to respective standardization bodies ETSI in Europe and ARIB in Japan.- Coordinator of the European ACTS FRAMES project December 1996 until August 1999) on the development of the basic concepts of the third generation radio interface, which was standardized in ETSI SMG.- From 2000 to 2003 major contributions to the ITU-R WP8F Framework Recommendation on IMT-2000 and systems beyond IMT-2000.- Founding member of Wireless World Research Forums – WWRF and elected chair of WWRF until December 2003.- Launch of a series of collaborating research projects in January 2004 in Framework Program 6 of the EU Commission on the development of systems beyond third generation mobile communications and coordination of an international consortium WINNER on the development of a new OFDM-based radio interface, which was the basis for IMT-Advanced and LTE (2004 to 2007).
