New Commons Development (NCD) is an innovative, experienced, and mission-driven not-for-profit development company that is helping to address housing affordability across Canada. I will be splitting my time leading projects in both Nova Scotia and British Columbia. We work in partnership with local non-profits, co-operatives, and municipalities to develop affordable housing and non-profit or community-owned real estate projects from inception to occupancy.Our business model differs from usual approaches to development of community assets in that we can bring front-end capital and professional development services to projects. We can take on risk in the delivery of these projects by deferring fees until project financing has been secured, helping to secure early stage capital from available sources, and in some cases employing our own working capital to move projects forward. This enables our partners to leverage the full value of their assets and generate new projects without needing to find front-end project technical and financial resources.

Increasing the use of wood building material and wood building systems in institutional, commercial, industrial and multi-storey residential construction with special focus on "mass timber panel" systems and the resurgence of tall wood buildings.In addition to creating www.WoodUseMatrix.com and eliciting 53 Community Councils to pass "Wood First Resolutions", Werner researched and created "The Tall Wood Building Renaissance" seminar which summarized this exciting opportunity. So far, he has delivered it 41 times to more than 68 organizations including more than 1,050 architects, engineers, developers and contractors.Business development efforts to advance mass timber panel systems have resulted in 60 structures across BC in the last 5 years. Werner was also instrumental in providing tours of these innovative structures to guests from around the world, explaining the importance of material selection, orientation and connection detail.

Implementing engineered wood and solid timber panel technology for the manufacture of support towers for the wind energy generation sector.Collaborate with regulators, wood industry, European patent holders and wind energy turbine industry leaders to pilot this new technology. Spearheaded the development of the tallest contemporary wood building in North America (at the time) in collaboration with Northern Lights College and leading architects and structural engineers.Set the stage for the world's first solid timber wind turbine tower including:- collaborating with the land owner;- securing Agricultural Land Registry exemption;- conducting a complete meteorological study;- progressing past the first stage of a $1 million EcoEnergy Grant application;- developing a Connectivity Plan with BC Hydro;- completing a geo-technical assessment; and- liaising with the European patent holders.

As Director – Wood First, Werner was responsible for creating and delivering a comprehensive strategy for increasing the economic value derived from BC’s forest resource. This included several key initiatives including researching and designing an overall strategy and co-authoring the BC Wood First Act. He also worked with proponents of value-added manufacturing, engineered wood products and advanced wood building systems, worked to advance the availability of wood-design software and was the advocate for next generation wood product manufacturing and use for the Ministry.

Werner performed all financial and business development functions for AIM and delivered a range of consulting and entrepreneurial services. Major projects included a synopsis of the major opportunities and issues facing the provision of Radio Services to BC Ministry of Forest field staff and a synopsis of the major opportunities and issues facing the IM, Finance and Operational groups with their 1,200 vehicle fleet, including a fully functional prototype that provided “slicing”, “dicing” and “drill-down” capabilities for the most important performance measures, such as effective vehicle usage, fuel consumption and vehicle operating and maintenance costs. In addition, Werner was involved in web-marketing and web-site development including “Aim4Prosperity.com”, “CreateLifeMap.com”, “GoldenOceanView.com” and “MileZero-Band.com”.

As Director of Analysis and Operational Resourcing determined, and modelled the key drivers of operational business success, motivated the Board of Directors, Executive’s, Senior and Operational Managers to accept these models, and worked with IT professionals to develop a business intelligence regimen of continuous analyzed the organization’s effectiveness in each key area. Quickly determined the key drivers of NAV Canada's performance and continuously developed tools and training to transfer this knowledge to operational professionals.Re-developed the air traffic controller staffing system, enhanced the operational planning and budgeting methodology, worked with IT department to develop and operationalize exception reporting and business intelligence systems.Created the "Managing Air Navigation Services Performance" training program for the International Air Transportation Association's Masters in ANS Management program, and delivered the training to international students.Helped NAV Canada receive the IATA Eagle Award for Excellence in Air Navigation Service, and also helped streamline key cost elements that enabled NAV Canada to deal with the industry downturn following 9/11.
