I manage the Health and Safety Management System and Strategic Emergency Management Program for the 2000+ employees of the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation. In this dynamic work environment I have worked to develop and maintain a Health and Safety Management System, foster continuous improvement of safety systems and grow the safety culture for our four professional sports teams operations and concert/event business at the Scotiabank Saddledome, McMahon Stadium and our various retail locations. Additionally, I am overseeing the design and implementation of a Strategic Emergency Management Plan to govern emergency response throughout the corporation. Throughout my time at CSEC, working with an amazing management team, we have effectively reduced injury rates, WCB costs, ensured compliance with applicable regulations and successfully achieved C.O.R. certification.

In my contract with the Calgary Airport Authority I facilitated and coordinated activities related to public safety, worker safety and emergency preparedness for the two and a half billion dollar International Terminal in a federally regulated unionized environment. This included activities such as: • Develop and deliver training to first responders (CFD/EMS) as well as internal resources regarding building fire alarm system and emergency response procedures.• Liaise between various internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective and timely communication of safety and emergency response concerns and generate effective corrective actions.• Successfully coordinated a smooth and efficient opening of the International Terminal Building using the Incident Command System.• Assisted in developing and coordinating the implementation of a safety and emergency response plan for a large public event (~2500 persons).

During my time at Newalta I moved up from an EHS Advisor handling day to day safety concerns to EHS Manager for fixed facilities in northern Alberta and north east British Columbia. In this role I managed EHS field advisors and environmental, health, and safety program implementation and continual improvement across the region. As an EHS Manager I championed programs related to injury reduction, environmental impact reduction, and regulatory compliance. In addition to ongoing program support and management, working collaboratively with functional support groups was a key job function, often in a leadership capacity. This included frequent work with the engineering group on process safety management related items, HR on implementation of fit for duty and D&A programs, and IT on continuous improvement to the electronic interface of the safety program and data collection. A particular highlight of my time at Newalta was engaging in regulatory affairs, managing regulatory correspondence for my region, and relationship building with local and regional regulators. This was a challenging aspect of the role and required research into legislation and focused relationship building. I enjoyed this challenge. One other highlight was being able to prepare for and conduct corporate safety meetings for up to 350 employees, I enjoy public speaking and this allowed me to hone my skills in that area.

I moved from consulting in health and safety into a permanent position with Newalta to gain experience in hands on program implementation as well as to increase my exposure to field operations. As EHS Advisor for central Alberta oil field waste recycling/processing facilities my primary duty was assisting staff with the implementation and growth of the environmental, health, and safety management system. During my time in this role I focused on relationship building with key stakeholders both internally and externally to facilitate the execution of corporate goals and programs; these included the implementation of behavioral safety programs, migrating incident reporting between electronic systems, and improving the quality of incident investigations and corrective actions. I enjoyed the challenge of transitioning from consulting with many companies mostly in the oil and gas industry to being highly focused support in the hazardous waste and recycling/recovery industry. The challenge of learning quickly and adapting to the new position was one I excelled at and after approximately a year in the position I was promoted to the EHS Manager role.

I left the culinary industry to work with OPX Consulting Inc. in 2006, this was a new opportunity and a completely different field. I thrived in the fast paced oil and gas consulting industry and quickly moved from completing mostly administrative tasks to account management, technical writing, and advising on safety and regulatory matters. During my time with OPX Consulting Inc. I was exposed to many different types of companies, and a multitude of various health, safety, environment, regulatory, and technical projects. Some key highlights of my tenure at OPX Consulting Inc. include:Creating and implementing Health, Safety, and Environment programs for over 50 clients, including project management to deliver product on time and on budget to the client. Conducted presentation to all levels of corporate structures for 20+ Oil and Gas companies. This includes corporate safety roll outs, pipeline program roll-outs, and specialized sales presentations on a wide variety of topics.Participated in a Canadian Trade Mission to Australia on behalf of Base International, involving numerous presentations and networking sessions to high level government and industry representatives.Assisted clients in obtaining C.O.R. or S.E.C.O.R. certification and 100% rating on ISNetworld subcontractor management program. Conducted Gap Analysis Audits and C.O.R. preparation audits for engineering and oilfield service companies. Created internal job hazard analyses, task hazard ranking and safe operating procedures for a variety of service companies and oil & gas producers. Assisted with the review of incidents, field safety documentation, and various gap analyses. This included critical incident investigations, involving high dollar value losses and fatalities. Research and development of regulatory documents and updates to safety documents.
