I lead the PepsiCo business across foods and beverages in one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic regions of the world. The APAC sector covers >25 markets, including Greater China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia.

The first thing that strikes one about Walmart is its size. The scale at which Walmart operates is mind-boggling, making it an easy caricature for big business. But those who’ve worked with Walmart will know it as an organization that has an even bigger heart. Sam Walton’s vision to help communities live better by saving them money remains an enduring obsession of this company.As CEO, I led a team of 100,000 associates responsible for over $10B in annual revenue across the Walmart, Sam’s Club, and eCommerce businesses in China. Working with startups and strategic partners such as Tencent and JD.com, we expanded our omnichannel offerings, developed innovative store formats, and leveraged data-driven insights to double eCommerce revenues for three successive years. An industry pioneer in omnichannel innovation and retail digitization, Walmart China was named Omnichannel Retail Enterprise of the Year by Harvard Business Review China in 2019.Many firms now recognize that China offers rich learnings for how digital technologies can transform businesses. To foster reverse innovation, I sponsored Walmart’s Data and Technology Transformation initiatives across our international markets.I also represented Walmart Inc. on the Boards of JD.com (NASDAQ:JD) China’s largest online retailer, and Dada Nexus (NASDAQ:DADA), China’s largest online grocery and crowd-sourced delivery platform.

As MD, I had P&L responsibility for ~400 restaurants and ~$800M in revenue. Together with my team and franchisee partners, we grew market share to a historical high, and significantly improved margins, cash flow, as well as brand equity. Digital engagement (#1 rated lifestyle app), e-commerce (2x in two years), and a relaunch of the McCafe platform (4x in two years) were key drivers which brought new consumer segments (millennials, light users, older adults) into the brand.I loved being back in the driver’s seat, executing hands-on a turnaround strategy, and impacting customer experiences in tangible and meaningful ways. But by far the most rewarding aspect of my time in Taiwan was the opportunity to work with, and develop amazing talent.Prior to being MD, I led the Strategy, Consumer insights and Business performance management functions for the ~$20B Asia, Pacific, Middle East and Africa region – McDonald’s fastest-growing segment comprising 38 diverse markets.

At BCG, I advised Consumer, Technology, and Principal Investor clients on growth strategy, innovation, and turnaround situations. Due to serendipity and practicality, I became the international specialist in my field, serving clients North and Latin America, Europe, North Asia, Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Middle East. I learnt a lot about business from BCG (and from my clients). It was humbling to work alongside so many bright individuals, but also intensely satisfying. I loved the feeling of having a blank sheet to work with when trying to solve a client’s most pressing strategic issues. Immersion and experience can often be a double-edged sword. Looking outside-in is something I remind myself to do when faced with challenges at work and in life.

Led a team of analysts at Singapore's Ministry of Trade and Industry to formulate Singapore’s trade and investment liberalization strategies in APEC.

I started my career as a police officer in Singapore, where I first developed a passion for operations. I was fortunate to have had early leadership roles in investigations, frontline operations, public affairs, legislative proposals, and international peacekeeping operations. I learnt to enjoy being constantly out of my comfort zone, and to step up in decisive moments of crisis and loss. In my last role prior to leaving the Force, I was the Commanding Officer of a police precinct as well as concurrent Head of Operations and Training for the Division (~1,000 officers).
