About Wes Cunningham

Mr. Cunningham has public history and archaeology experience including managing historic properties, cataloguing and creating metadata for archival special collections, as a field archaeologist, as an archaeological laboratory technician, and as a historic preservation specialist. He has functioned as a project manager and is skilled in historical research and writing. Mr. Cunningham has experience with National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) nominations and amendments for historic properties and districts including property assessments, evaluations, research, and writing. He is experienced in the technical aspects of archaeological and historic architecture survey fieldwork, and report writing, in addition to detailed archival research. He has extensive experience in fieldwork as a historian conducting research, including oral histories and archival exploration; as an architectural historian surveying buildings, districts, and landscapes; and as an archaeologist performing Phase I surveys to identify sites and assisting on intensive archaeological excavations at historic and prehistoric sites to assess NRHP eligibility and recover significant archaeological data. His curriculum at Murray State included hands-on experience as an archaeological intern with Corn Island Archaeology of Louisville, Kentucky under the academic supervision of Dr. Kit Wesler. He received Master’s Degree in History from the University of Louisville with a focus on Public History and was awarded the Virginia “Jenny” Madden Award for exhibiting leadership. He has worked on numerous architectural history and archaeological investigations throughout the eastern United States from Michigan and the Great Lakes Regions to Florida and the Gulf Coast.
