I managed the software development team and overall technology strategy of Democracy Works. Democracy Works is a non-partisan non-profit organization dedicated to making voting in the United States fit the way we live in the 21st century. Towards that end they provide software, services, and data for voters and election officials that help them get registered to vote, stay registered to vote, get mail-in ballots, know when elections they can vote in are happening, and track mail-in ballots through the postal system. Most of Democracy Works' software is written in Clojure and ClojureScript. They also use RabbitMQ, Docker, AWS, and Datomic in their infrastructure.

Started out very cool and exciting. We were building solid infrastructure and constituent-facing Rails apps to get the party out of the boom-and-bust campaign cycle and instead have a technology platform that would evolve year after year. But after a leadership turnover they lost the plot and things went back to business-as-usual.
