At Ambition, I was the first engineer and managed the technical product development and growth of our engineering team. During this time, I continued the be the primary backend engineer and managed our technical development.We had many notable engineering accomplishments during this time, a few that are listed below:* We grew our Python / Django backend tremendously and contributed over 20 Django apps back to the open source community (check out of open-source contributions at github.com/ambitioninc).* I authored the primary backend components related to our interactive metric processing, data collection system, competition processing, and other backend processing architecture.* Ambition went through the YCombinator Winter 2014 incubator and were voted one of the best startups in the batch of over 50 (http://techcrunch.com/2014/03/27/y-combinator-top-three-startups/).I wore many hats at Ambition and gained a lot of experience in not only engineering and engineering management, but also in product support and onboarding enterprise customers. I worked with the MapReduce team and helped develop new strategies for worker utilization of MapReduce jobs. Specifically, given a set of available backup workers, I used machine learning to determine which straggling workers in a MapReduce job should be replicated by backup workers.

I assessed and improved the scalability of a volume rendering application and added a recently discovered image compositing algorithm, radix-k, to the implementation. I tested and contributed various optimizations to the radix-k algorithm. I also researched various methods for performing I/O on scientific datasets stored in multiple files.

I conducted performance analysis and tuning of volume rendering on the IBM BlueGene/P architecture. I implemented a parallel writer for the rendered images and optimized various scalability and performance aspects of the application. I also tested and implemented various image compositing algorithms for the renderer.

I developed software for converting data from the neutron scattering instruments at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) into the NeXus format. This format is much more amenable to scientific analysis at SNS. Furthermore, the conversion was tuned to occur in an interactive manner directly after the instruments gathered data.
