In this intern project I actively worked together with the local university of Diponegoro (UNDIP), municipality of Semarang and central Java province. Together with local engineers we worked on the project Water as Leverage (WaL) funded by RVO. This project aims to lay a blueprint for coastal cities around the world facing similar water issues, i.e. floods (coastal and river), groundwater depletion, land inundation and a lack of adequate waste water and drinking water facilities. During my study I focused on finding the most appropriate alternative to groundwater abstraction (in terms of sustainability and economics) for the industrial area Genuk in the north-east of Semarang.

I did my thesis research/internship on "the influence of intercropping on soil quality" at the NGO Prosuco. Prosuco (Promocíon de la Sustentabilidad y Conocimientos Compartidos) promotes knowledge on sustainable agriculture. They do this using a system of specialised farmers ("Yapuchiris") that spread the knowledge to the local communities. In this research I educated the farmers in a workshop, and did research on how intercropping (a strategy within permaculture) to improve soil quality. This is an interesting alternative for farmers that can not afford inputs to improve their yields.
