Profile bio

About Wes K.

Whatever your job is, you should perform it to the best of your ability. That conviction has guided me since, as a young Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician in the U.S. Air Force, I witnessed junior and even senior supervisors failing to take pride in or accountability for their work. Fortunately, my curiosity won out over criticism, and I eagerly searched for an explanation for their behavior. I realized, in a quintessential ‘light bulb’ moment, that the accountability and pride I looked for in my leaders was dependent upon having a team that functioned so seamlessly, with each member playing an important and unique role, that each of us could have the room to explore our own strengths, contributions, and interests. With each new responsibility that came my way, I challenged myself to lean on others when I needed their expertise, rather than assuming I always knew the best way to handle a situation; as a supervisor, I learned to leverage that expertise, delegate, and empower my subordinates to achieve their own growth. As I explore the civilian workforce, I’m looking for a career that will utilize the leadership skills I’ve gained through my military service in addition to my emergency management degree. I’m well-versed in high-risk, classified data and threat analysis and would love to continue serving my country at the local, state, or federal level by protecting our critical resources and leading teams to find solutions during conflicts.

In mid-2017, I was promoted to the head of my unit’s equipment department. At this point in my career, I started shifting away from the day-to-day operations of EOD and focusing on the behind-the-scenes logistics. Explosive Ordnance Disposal Journeyman

Nellis Air Force Base, NV

As a journeyman in EOD, I participated in all of the tactical and operational activities I had previously, but I was now qualified to serve as a team leader, not just a team member. Explosive Ordnance Disposal Apprentice

Cannon Air Force Base, NM

The first assignment for every EOD technician is typically a busy one, and that was definitely the case in the early 2000s.
