My role as Director of Engineering at ZeroFOX involved leading software architecture, improving and iterating on the development process, and managing a team of 12-15 developers.My most important architecture goal is scalability, not just in terms of meeting increased demand, but also in being able to accommodate new use cases with minimal effort. To that end, I designed a language to allow new kinds of analysis to be added to the product without any code changes or deployments, and expanded the use of ZeroFOX's REST APIs to serve as an internal data layer.As a manager and driver of the development process, I oversaw a transition from three specialist teams to three cross-functional teams, dramatically reducing the coordination overhead of building cross-stack features (rarely is a product feature limited to a single component of the stack!). I also led the development team through a significant growth period, at one point hiring and on-boarding four developers in the span of a month.

As the principal engineer at ZeroFOX, I led the design of their software architecture, while serving as the scrum master of the web application team and continuing to directly contribute code to the product. In particular, I was responsible for transitioning ZeroFOX's product from large projects relying on low-level socket communication to a service-oriented architecture using REST APIs and message queuing. This had the effect of vastly reducing the coordination burden between developers, enabling a more robust testing and deployment pipeline, and allowing for simple, granular scaling.My core skills and technologies in this role included:- REST API design, including the use of Django REST Framework- AWS services, including EC2, SQS, DynamoDB, RDS, S3, and Redshift- Scrum-based agile software development- Jenkins CI, for automated testing and deployment- MySQL, both with and without ORM- Lightweight message-passing services in Node.js

As a software engineer at ZeroFOX, I performed development and maintenance of a social media cybersecurity product. In addition to improving and building on the core product, I personally designed and implemented many new features and services, often on short deadlines with rapid iteration cycles. A number of these features went on to become core components of ZeroFOX's business, including a map for visualizing link threats and a system for detecting and classifying impersonators on social media.The core technologies that I used included:- Python + Django- Scala + Akka- Machine learning classifiers- Social network APIs- Javascript, both on the client (jQuery) and server (Node.js)- MySQL- MongoDB
